'05-4.6L Crown Vic

Anyone ever hooked up an after market tach to this motor? Is it possible to splice into one of the COP wires to find the ignition pulse power? Is there an impediance problem hooking into that COP circuit? Maybe hook in someplace else?
The dealer service mgr didn't know where to hook it, and said no Ford tach kits are avail, that I would have to go after market route. Of course, if I smoke something up, it was mine (no warranty)!
Any ideas ?

Check with Autometer. I believe they know what PCM wire to tie into for their tach's.

any werd on this? I too an interested in this mod. My alternate route is to get a gauge pod that fits in the center console and fit three gauges; one being a tach. (autometer sells a small tack for 125$)

So Far after several back and forth e-mails with autometer

Tech support, I need to buy in addition to the, auto meter tach, an adapter for $86.99, which will tie into the impulse power circuit behind the battery. There is a solid red wire at pin #1 of the 16 pin connector behind the battery that needs to be cut and splice in this adapter. Also, there is aparantly an orange with blk stripe wire on the dimmer module which needs to be also paralleled into for the light circuit in the tach. No idea where this dimmer mod is located. He said it supplies the dash light circuit power.

I put it all on hold for now. That adapter is pricy! And I wish there were better instructions on finding and tieing into this orange/blk wire. The Ford dealer isn't too crazy about trying that installation job, and said if anything is smoked it will be on me! I wish Ford offered a dealer installed tach retro package for that Crown Vic. I do like to watch my revs when shifting, driving, fast idling, and I have always had one.

Tech support:

A good service manual should tell you where the dimmer module is located. I'd say it's somewhere in the steering column area, that's where most of the modules seem to be except for the GEM module, it's usually with the fuse box.

OK LxMan

Thanks for your help. You steered me in the right direction, I just don't want to get into something over my head . I have a real nice running car, and I hate to wreck anything.
BTW, could you recommend where to find a good service manual for this '05 Vic of mine? Years back, Ford used to give a name and mailing address with price list for service manuals in the back of the owner's manual. They quit that

If you are still lookinh for a tach and other gages check out Scan Gauge at http://www.scangauge.com/. NO wire mods are needed. I have one on a 99 Exp and love it.

Thanks Modified

That scangauge unit lools very interesting. It is foolproof to install (just plug it in to an existing plug), has way more data and features than just a plain old tach, and is priced affordable at $129.99. I am not sure if plugging into that factory data plug would impact Ford's warranty. I'd have to check on that.

The only negative I can see is by mounting it on the center consoul, I doubt if I could read it without putting on my reading glasses, then I'd have to take them off to drive. Switching those glasses on and off could be distracting! And, mounting it on top of the dash would be something to look over the wheel to see the road. I wish it's read-out was larger for us aging folks.

You might contact the parts dept. at your local dealer, they may have a suggestion on where to get one. The mechanic's in the service dept have them, possibly on CD/DVD, I'm sure.

If you never found a manual, here's the paper manual by Helm and CD/DVD's on eBay.

And for your tach driver:

The Scan Gage can be attached to the dash by the LH A pillar. This puts it out of the way but very visable from the drivers seat.
