15" wheels on a '97 F-150

NOOOOOOOO. the bolt patterns are not the same, the old one is a 5x5.5 and the 97-04 is 5x135. I have put 16's on my 97 with no problem because aftermarket wheels will clear the brakes, I don't think a 15" wheel will. It's recommended not to put anything less than a 16.5, which is what I have on there right now. Even if the old wheel will slide over the studs, it's extremely unsafe, because they won't sit properly on the hub.
Bye the way, backspacing is determined by rim width, tire size, lift etc. For example, I have 16.5x9.75 wheels with 37x12.50 with a 7" lift and my backspacing is 4.5"

5 x 135 is approximately 5 x 5.3", so the bolt circle issue will stop you dead. Another issue is that the factory 1997 F-150 rims are hub-centric, relying on a precise fit with the wheel hub, not the wheel lugs, to keep the wheel from imitating a dribbling basketball as you drive down the highway. Older F-150 wheels are lug-centric, relying on the tapered end of the tightened lug nuts to center the rim on the hub.
