the 302's from '87 & up also come with forged pistons from the factory, which is great if you want to bolt on a power adder.

Ford Racing also sells stock 302s which are in that catalog

I believe 89-92 mustangs had forged pistons, but I think that is it. Could be 87...but I know 89-92's have them but it's a good idea to check the build date, the late 92s might not have them.

Let me stick my neck out here. I'm not THAT familiar with the Ford small blocks, but...

Would it be possible to convert that 351M to a 400, and put 351C 4 barrel heads on it, along with the appropriate (big) cam, high compression pistons, intake, headers, etc? Seems to me like that would be the thing to build. Cubic inches for torque and high flowing heads for HP, all in one happy motor.

Yes, it is entirely possible, and has been done many times. The problem lies with fitting the 400 into the Mustang and bolting everything up. Yes, it can be done, but it would create some headaches.

Life and the pursuit of the truth about the 400 Ford

Cool, I love to hear 400 Ford opinions. I wrote a paper on the 400 Ford but it's too large to post! Something about 10,000 Vs 19,000 objects.........

seriously! if you use an engine properly there all good! a 351m has great potential, if you are an enthusiast and dont want to follow the herd. a 351m has virtually no aftermaket when compared to the 302, and not many fans for that matter, but it has all the right stuff as is. these things out of the box have stout blocks, lots of room for stroke enlarge ment, huge bearing journals and the best part they have super long rods yeilding a better rod ratio of any motor that i know of! it will run you just gotta know the tricks, 302 is cool but everybody got em just like opinions.

the 302 is a decent motor, but if you are going to make some serious power get a stud girdle(i think thats how you spell it). personally i would do a 347 NA with some afr's and have at it. my friend had a 347 with some afr 205's on it and a 150 shot of nitrous and it made over 630 ft/lbs and 600hp. NA the thing made 430ft/lbs and 420hp. did i forget to mention that he didn't turn it past 6000! as for the 400 having the longest stroke of any stock ford, that is lie. the 5.4l has a 4.16 stroke and so does the v10, the 400 only has a 4 inch stroke.

I'm not sure ,but, I think the 400 has the longest pushrods of any Ford engine , because of the deck height...

sorry i meant connecting rod, pushrods are the same in a 351M and 400M. a long connecting rod promotes midrange torque and helps out in the upper rpms. the piston "dwells at TDC" longer cool huh!

302 Vs 400

Hmmmm. 400 junk. Cool. 302's are great motors is you have the bajillion $
to spend on them to get the performance on par with a low dollar 400.
