Thats probably a Autolite/Motorcraft carb. It adjusts the same as most. Turn in the air mixture screws until they just barely bottom out and then back off 1 1/2 turns. Fine tune from there.
However from your description I suspect the carb needs a good cleaning/rebuild. Probably a bunch of sediment, rust and varnish in there.
Then clean the tank, inspect/replace the lines and install a good fuel filter.

Yea I had the same problem on my 68 Autolite. If you left the manual choke on about 75%, the engine ran great. But take the choke all the way off and it would stall the first time you let off the gas. I rebulit the carb twice but could not get it to run right. I finally chalked it up to a worn out body where the extra air was getting in around the pivot points. I bought a new autolite off of Ebay for $50 and the truck ran great. Good luck, Jag
