Windsor Engine plant closing rumour and the V10

I thought that Ford could'nt make enough of the V10 to meet demand. To bad it looks like they are not showing commitment to this engine since it is built at the Windsor engine plant. There is 2 engine plants in Windsor Ontario. "Essex Engine" and "Windsor Engine" I searched news reports and they constantly say the Windsor engine plant in the closing rumour where the v10 is built. Hope this doesn't happen. Does anyone know if the engine is built at any other plants currently. I hate to see all these closings as all these North American car plants have equipment in them that I service for my living.

well, I am from Windsor and I am very familiar with Ford operations here. I can tell you with 100% certainty that the only plant closing is the Windsor Casting Plant which makes the cast iron 4.2l block and a series of crankshafts. I can assure you the V10 is here for a while yet. As far as Ford not being able to make enough of them, that is not true. The v10 line is only a medium volume line meaning if Ford wanted to make more, they most certainly could. I fact, the v10 has recently seen down time from lack of demand after the gas price spikes.

i3shooter, thanks for the update and less than a year ago we had a poster that claimed he worked at the V10 plant and it was going flat out.

Was that true in your opinion and is the SD plant even going flat out anymore because for quite a few years it was ?

Sure see a lot of new Dodges around here and I think the 6.0 PSD has sold as many Dodges as Cummins has. I just read a post up in the new 6.4 forum from a guy that claims he works for an outfit that does the tooling for the new
twin turbos on the 6.4 . One is low pressure and one is high, no more poblematic variable vane POS and I called that one 6 months back.

I cannot speak for the previous person who claimed to work on the V10 line. But I can tell you this, I too am a Ford employee and the current production of the V10 is as follows. The V10 and the 5.4 and the 4.6 all used to be built at Windsor Engine Plant. Quite some time ago the 4.6 was dropped from Windsor Engine Plant and is now built in the U.S. The production of the 5.4 and the 6.8 was enough to keep the plant running at full capacity for many years. That changed two years ago when the line was retooled for the 3v 5.4. The V10 assembly line was moved to another building on the same site called the Annex. So now Windsor Engine Plant assembles strictly the 5.4. However, many of the components for the V10 such as the crankshaft and Block are still machined at Windsor Engine Plant and sent a stones throw away to the Annex to assemble the V10 on a much slower assembly line than the 5.4.

Just as a side note, I do not own a v10SD but I am reading this forum to see how happy the V10 owners are as I too am interested in a new f250 V10 as a towing vehicle and a daily ride

Welcome to the forum i3shooter and you will find most of us are pretty happy with our V10s. This 05 is my all time favorite vehicle and I have bought a lot of new Ford trucks.
Eight to be exact, 5 gassers and 3 diesels. This 05 V10 gives me the best mileage of any gas truck I have ever owned. Incredible to me because it is a ton heavier than my last gasser ( 88 F250 4x4 SC LB 460 C6 auto ) and has much more power than the 460 and the 95 and 00 7.3 PSDs which I liked a lot. It matches the performance of my 04 PSD which gave me a lot of grief. Great to have a Ford employee on the Forum.

Thanks Wrenchtraveller, this site has proven to be very informative and educational. Without it I probably would have just went to the dealership and picked out Super Duty PSD. Now I feel more confident in getting a V10 with far less problems to worry about and save a lot of cash.

Welcome to the site!

I've also read that the casting plant was closing. Didn't figure it was anything big.

i3shooter-
You've given some wonderful insight on the operations up there. Thanks!

It makes sense that Ford would move the V10 operations out of the 5.4 area- especially since the engine differences have really increased. I am a little suprised that they moved all of the 4.6L production to Romeo?? I guess they needed the capacity for all the 5.4s being sold.

As for the V10 Super Duty, it just can't be beat. This is my 4th one and each has been better than the previous one.

The Windsor Casting Plant was built in 1934 and is a very historic building. Yes it will be sad to see it go but in 1980 it closed only to reopen two years later. Hopefully history will repeat itself again. Currently the plant employes just under 600 workers.
As I said in a previous post, Windsor Engine Plant assembles only the 5.4 now and i believe they build about 2,800 engines a day. I think the 4.6 had to move because this plant alone would not be able to keep up with demand for both engines.

have a great day, I now have to go and shovel snow

Interesting reading i3

I didn't know the 4.6 left Canada either, not that it makes any difference, I have one in my CV. Good motor too, SOHC, likes RPM's just like the V10.

I can tell you if I were to trade my '05 F-350SD for an '06, I'd buy it just like my '05 is equipped--- V10, 4X4, 6spd, 4.30 gear, single wheels. Nothing in the pick-up market comes close to competing with it. By The Way, it is 4 deg and snowy here!

Thanks Ishooter for the firsthand info. Hope everythings works out for the workers. Hope Ford continues to support and develop the V10 engine. I am also very impressed with it and will continue to use it as my TV engine of choice hopefully for many years. Now if only I could convince my good friend in Manchester MI to seriously look at the V10. Here's got an old 460 and he's being tempted by a dealer with 3 buyback PSD's. Here rightfully scared of them but I can't convince him to go for the V10. He really likes my 2001 and I keep telling him to find a 2005 or 06 3V V10 to try. Oh well it's his choice.

Cheers

and you will find most of us are pretty happy with our V10s.
The rest are ecstatic. It's the kind of happiness where if you need six bolts for a project you make 6 trips to the hardware to get them one at a time to increase the amount of time spent with the SuperDuty. While at the hardware you run into other V10 SD guys doing the same thing, all wearing a certain familiar BSEG.....

Earlier this year Wrench convinced me to go with the 05 3v V10 and I couldn't be happer. Well, on second thought, I'd be happer if I could spend more time behind the wheel.
