I'd do an oil change immediately (unless you know for sure the last time it was done), motorcraft 5w-20, check tranny fluid. How many miles are on it? If you got spare time, stick a socket down the COP hole and make sure the plugs are nice and tight. Once you do all that, it's time to start shoppin for a blower : )
just kiddin, have your local mechanic check it out, make sure everything is sound, and happy truckin! I got an '01 5.4 super cab 4x4, 73,xxx on the ticker, and i love it. no troubles

change the engine oil, transmission fluid and filter, gas filter, and drin both axles and refill with gear lube. lift the front end a couple inches and set on a-frames and chekc the ball joints and tie rod frame anchor for looseness. mine has 130,000 miles and like you say--- GREAT--. thinking about drive shaft universals and spark plugs by next spring. My driver and passenger door windows were "slow and squeeky". took the panels off and lubed things up good. now very free. elect motors are known to be a long term problme. maybe easier operation will make them last longer.

Thats the first thing I did when I got my truck, I changed all the oils right away. Who knows when the last time they were replaced, and it never hurts to have fresh stuff!

Question

Sorry if I ask simple questions...I'm new to Ford trucks.

What is the recommeded oil for the differentials? And the transfer case?

Thanks

And if you don't have the owners manual what do you do? Apparently you don't ask here.

No, I'm sure thats not what he meant atok. Some different trucks use different gear oils, and its best to check owners manual. If you don't have one, I'm sure you can pick one up at a ford dealership, or download one right here ---> Ford Fleet

Just input year, make, and model for your truck atok, and go to specifications. We just wouldn't want to tell you the wrong gear lube and have it destroy your differential.
{edit} link defiitely goes to paypal, don't know why, but here's the address. Copy and paste this into new browser window - https://www.fleet.ford.com/maintenance/owners_manuals/default.asp

Or go to fleet.ford.com, go to maintenance dropdown menu, and hit owners manuals.

new 01

my 01 screw gets terrible mileage but i love the truck to much to complain. everything on mine is stock except for the intake mod and a k&n filter. i tow a 6000lb trailer with no problems. in the future i will change the exhaust system but for now the truck works great. good luck.

Thanks for the link Fbodyfan. Actually, the link in your post didn't work for me, but I did get there by going directly to www.fleet.ford.com.

Thanks
