Question Trident 5.4L history?

Hey Folks,

I've been trying to settle an argument.

Anybody know how long the Trident 5.4L has been around? I know the 5.4L has been made at the Windsor (sp?) plant’s since 2002, but where were they made before that? Curious because my Supercrew with its Trident 5.4L is a 2001.

Also am I wrong or isn’t a “Trident” (as in Poseidon’s “three” fingered pitchfork) the designation for “all” three valve (24 valve) engines? i.e trident = three.

Thanks,
Bret

Geez?!? Go ahead & pick on the new guy. Guy makes a little type-o and someone gets all upset. Sorryeeee.

BTW "Triton" was actually Poseidon's son, not his weapon the Trident. I guess my fingers knew what they wanted to say more than I did. My bad..

superrangerman2002 is gaining momentum as a positive member of FTE.
The Triton line up has been around for quite a while now, dating back to the 4.6L modular motor that was introduced in the CrownVic some time near '95.

In '97 the 2v 4.6L and sister 2v 5.4L (same bore but longer stroke) and v10 (same bore and stroke as the 5.4L but with 2 more cylinders) were added to the F series trucks.

In '04 the 5.4L picked up the 3v technology along with a few other goodies.

The Modular motors have been around for quite some time, and are considered to be one of the 10 best engines of all time in certain mags.

Wink

Ford first came out with the Triton series engines in 1997 to replace the old 5.0 and 5.8 Windsor engines from the 60's. The 4.6 and 5.4 are the same family designed and engineered to provide better fuel economy and more power and torgue than the previous Windsor engines. In 2004, Ford came out with the 5.4 3V.

The 4.6 modulor engine came out in 1992 in the Ford Crown Vic, Mercury Grand Marquis, and Lincoln Town car. At least that's what the valve covers in my namesake say. :-)

I don't think the Triton name was actually used, at least for marketing, until the 5.4 came out in the '97 series F150. I don't think they usually refer to the 4.6 today as a Triton in the cars, although it's pretty much the same engine as in the F150's. But the 4.6, 5.4, and V10 are all modulor engines based off the "Triton" series.

So you could argue without too much of a stretch that the Triton actually started in 1992. It just wasn't called that yet. Ford had to keep up with the "Vortec" and "Hemi" names in marketing.

exiled,

no they did not. where do you find this stuff? the triton series motor was launched for the 1997 redeisgn. that includes the 4.6 and 5.4. in 96 they still used the windsor and 300 six engine. the e series got the engines too with a v 10 option on the 3/4 and 1 ton vans. the superduty trucks came along in 98 and also got the same treatment but the 4.6 was not used in them. only the 5.4 and v-10. the expy debuted in 97 and had 4.6 or 5.4 triton engines as options, the navigator got the 32v 5.4 intech.
