Tire/Rim Options for '73 F-250 4x4

So I just aquired a 1973 F-250 4x4, V8(360 right?), divored transfer case, auto tranny, and D44, D60 drivetrain for $40 ha..

And anyways the tires are bald, and the rims are hell. So im going for redneck and slappin on some nice rims/tires, some nice big tires.

I plan to use this truck strictly for off road use as it will only be driven on road to get to the local places. Will i need Bead-Lockers? not a very rocky area just muddy and a few crazy side hills.

I love the look of black poslished rims as with black tires they are cool, but rather then a tall tire like a 35 or something i really like a fat wide tire. I dont know how this is done but that would be my goal, a 33/35 that sticks out nice and wide (picture included)

Thats how far i would like the tires to stick out but they dont have to be that tall.

Um yes so any tire combonations you guys have tried would be good to know about, also im not spending tooo much. I went to a few shops and the prices, tire + rim + all mounted up/balanced were around $2000CAD.

Oh yeah seeing as this is waht my truck looks like, i like the height of these tires but am looking for the wider stance. so like 4" wider then my fenders

I would go with a set of 35x14.50 Super Swamper Thornbirds

Or some 36x14.50 Mickey Thompson Baja Belted

you have to find rims with the offset you want I have a set of 10 inch wide (9.75) with like a 6 inch offset and a set with 7 inch offset the only problem with lots of offset is it's hard on wheel bearings you'll probably have to find a good 4x4 shop with people that know wheels and tires to get the info you need and look at tire manufacturer web sites to get an idea on whats available or try custom wheel makers

What is meant by offset is the location of the mounting flange in respect to the centerline of the wheel. The offset is crucial, as it relates to steering components. with the wrong offset, your tires will rub on your steering components.

As others have said, tires that wide are hard on wheel bearings as they tend to introduce more radial and thrust loads. Talk with some people who know what they're doing when it comes to wheels and tires.

And yes, 36" tires should fit w/o problems on a F250 Highboy, I know 35's do.

I built them outa heavy wall 3" stainless tube I had lying around, they are bolted to the frame and sprayed with the same stuff as the bed liner. You can put a 300/lb guy on them and they dont move.

I had plans what would/will be a really cool set of bars built outa 3 1/2" schedule 80 pipe. I drew some plans up for them for this truck BUT descided that I would but them on my 79' when (if) I ever get it done.

I figured it was custom because I have been unable to find anything in the aftermarket for my truck. I have my plans drawn up, I just need to save money to have someone make it for me. I can't weld or it would already be done.....probably

+massacre+, You said your truck was a 1973? The photo of the red truck looks like a 1976. You paid $40.00? You got one very good deal!

If you want them to stick out i would go with 35x15.5x16.6 sx's on 16.5x12 wheels, I have 33x15.5x15 sx's on 15x12 wheels and they stick out about 4 inches on each side.

If I were buying new wheels and tires, I would do away with the 16.5" rims altogether. I would just go ahead and get 17's. I cannot fathom why they ever came up with such an oddball rim size. Why not just have made 17's to begin with?

I agree!!! I have a almost new set of 245/16's laying in the shed for this truck, only they are on the steel wheels. I got these aluminums from a neighbor for free, thinking that they were 16's. I had to have these rims though because they literally "make the pickup" it looked like crap with the steel rims on it. Who ever thought up 16.5 should be shot. The beads on 16.5s are not the best for loading it down either but I pump the tires up to max air and as of yet have had no troubles.
