Replacing the headlight switch is quite simple.

1. Remove the switch knob. The knob is held on the shaft by a spring steel wedge that is accessed throught the small notch in the knob. Use a small bladed flat screw driver to pry the spring steel member backward toward the knob to release it.

2. Remove the headlight switch shaft retaining nut.

3. Remove the switch with access from behind the dash and disconnect the switch from the connector at the wiring harness.

4. Most new switches do not include the shaft so you need to remove the old one from the old switch. On top of the switch, there is a button shaped member that you press down on to release the shaft. Then insert the old shaft into the new switch.

5. Connect the new switch to the wiring harness connector.

6. Insert the switch through the shaft hole in the dash with the top of the switch assembly - the connector part - facing upward and tighten the shaft nut and finally press on the knob.

That's it. Job done...

Just like the instructions above (from 3 years ago) - use a small screwdriver or
maybe a curved dental pick to release the spring-steel tab, it's accessible via a
small slot where the plastic knob meets the shaft.

Push the tab towards your body, towards the front of the knob; don't try to pull it back,
that'd tighten it.

That is not true. The windshield wiper switch has the small slot and spring steel clip the headlight switch does not.

To remove the headlight switch, you need to disconnect the battery first because you need to turn the lights on to remove the shaft.

Pull the switch out to the parking position, and reach up underneath the dash (it's not easy to do you have to be a contortionist) and you'll see a small button on the bottom that you have to push up into the switch while pulling the knob/shaft out at the same time. A long pencil with a good eraser works well for pushing the button in.

Remove the instrument cluster bezel and finally remove the nut that holds the switch into the dash. When installing the new switch, make sure that you line up the little square tang with the dash or else it will spin and the nut won't tighten completely.

I've removed so many of them, that I can reach up under the dash as push the button in without even looking.

Take a flash light and look under the dash and you'll see the button.

One more thing, if you have the under dash courtesy lights it makes it even harder to get your hand up in there.

Thanks Stosh, I've already removed the headlight switch knob. ctu was telling me how to remove the windshield wiper knob so I can remove the bezel to have better access to the headlight switch. The headlight switch is already spinning around so i think it's pretty loose, just cant seem to get it out.

Actually it does. Or at least some do. At least mine does, but I never use it, i use the push button technique.

This is a question though of both of you guys being right.

How often does that happen in life?

I have never seen a headlight switch with the spring clip in all my travels.

I'd like to see a pic of one if anyone has one.

Everyone that I've ever pulled out, I had to push the button on the switch.

I have two, one is on my truck.

It has the hook just like the wiper knob does. look for a slit at the bottom of the knob. The switch itself has the push button release.

You can remove the knob and shaft, or the knob from the shaft.

I will try to get a picture of it, but the ex-wife took the digital camera. so might take awhile.

It's ok. I know what you are talking about.

It just blows my mind that for as many trucks/broncos that I've pillaged that I haven't come across one that didn't need to have the button pushed to take it out.

And, why would they put both on the same switch?
