POSITRACTION FOR 78 F250

I HAVE RECENTLY PURCHASED A MINT CONDITION F250. IT HAS A 400 WITH DANA 60 REAR, DANA 44 FRONT AND 205 TRANFERE. THE DILEMA IS I HAVE HAD IT UP IN THE SNOW AND MUD ABOUT 4 TIMES NOW AND HAVE REALIZED I CANNOT STAND THE LIMITED SLIP THAT IT IS EQUIPPED WITH. RESEARCHING I HAVE SO MANY DIFFERENT ANSWERS. ONE IS GO TO ARB LOCKERS FRONT AND REAR. THIS IS A LITTLE EXPENSIVE. THE OTHER IS DETROIT LOCKERS. AND YET ANOTHER IS ORIGINAL FORD POSITRATION FRONT AND REAR. ANYBODY GOT SOME GOOD ADVICE & EXPERIENCE AS TO WHERE I SHOULD BE HEADING. KEEPING IN MIND THAT I WANT TO HAVE A GOOD DRIVER ON THE ROAD. BUT GREAT TRACTION MACHINE OFF ROAD.

The one thing you don't want to do is WASTE your money on ARB----they have alot of weak links in the chain , i.e. , low air compressor volume , breaks in the air lines , etc...... the posi that you currently have may need a new set of clutches---so don't judge it until you know for sure that it is malfunctioning!!!The dana-spicer trac lok(2 pinions) and \or the power lok(4 pinions) are the best posi's you can buy in my opinion----but, you maynot agree-----the lockers in the front can be a pain in the BUTT----lockers in the rear are not as difficult to accept--but I think they will result in alittle more tire wear over time-----I personnally would put power lok's in both front and rear , but they run around 500 for the rear for a d-60 and probably alittle less for the d-44---and all things considered you would be very happy with your choice , fd :-X11

Sorry,
for offending you folks with the large case letters. I am responding to your reply about the power locks. Who makes them and are you sure this is the best for the money and reliability? I also think you mis understood me on the existing front end and rear end. They are both limited slip. You never replied about your opinion on the factory positraction set up. This could be an easy solution for I am probably able to find them at the local wrecking yard. But at the same time I am looking for some good feed back on the overall scenario.

Here is what I know and there are other folks here abouts that can tell you much more than I.....both Power lok and Trac Lok are made by dana-Spicer----And I believe have been installed into new ford trucks for a long time-----if ford also sells a posi unit under the ford name i can't speak to that particular issue--and what the difference's between a "ford" posi and a dana unit are will have to be explained by somebody who has had experience with them both---The trac lok is the less expensive of the two---about 300 depending on where you buy them---the power loc is the big brother of the trac lok and has 4 pinions instead of two--it is definitely stronger and costs more ----around 500 and is not as readily available as the trac lok......Drive Train Direct sells both the Power Lok and Trac Lok and I would call them and visit with aknowledgeable sales person about what your expectations are and what you can "live" with-----There is nothing that works like a locker except a locker--and it very well maybe that you might want to rethink your expectations---driveability on the street and and absolute "gonads to the wall" in the dirt in my mind are mutually exclusive----I believe that the dana spicer Posi units are an acceptable trade-off between the the two extreme's ---absolute street performance----and maximum performance off road----I'm a middle of the road guy---maybe some of the very experienced folks will take the TIME to respond----fd :-X11

I'm not an offroad guy but I do have a suggestion.Look into Auburn limited slips.I have one in the '78 f100 2wd I drive everyday. It's actually been in two different trucks with probably 50,xxx miles on it total.I've never had a problem,no lockup noises,no whine,no chattering around corners. They sell for $345 from Jeg's.

The term "POSI-traction" is the GM name for a locking diff.

POSITRACTION FOR 78 F250

I tend to use POSI as generic term associating it with a Trac Loc\Power Lok Non-locking traction device that makes Both tires turn when certain mechanical conditions are met---i.e. when there is slippage in either axle which causes the clutches to engage and engage both axles for as long as the conditions exist and then to disengage at the appropriate time vs the locker being engaged all the time , irrespective of the necessity of the situation at hand........I will try to be more selective with the loose utilization of the term "posi" and try to apply it in reference to gm products , which means that I will probably never use it on this website ---given the fact that only blue ovals will be found here!!!fd :-X11

POSITRACTION FOR 78 F250

pat,
ok here goes i have a detroit locker in the rear of my f250 i have noticed a little bit more tire wear than usual but not a real problem in my opnion the detroit is the best for this application

next the front axel does it snow where you live in the winter or how about ice? you dont want a locker in the front with these kinds of weather conditions sure it will go straight but you cant turn very good the truck just wants to go straight so for this reason i would buy the arb air locker for the front because you can lock it and un lock it at the touch of a button my arb is going in this summer

any way just my 2 cents
