Help with water pump
I am currently trying to get the fan off of the water pump shaft. I went to Advanced and bought the "Ford Fan Clutch Wrench Set 1-7/16" and 2-1/4"". When I went to use them the wrenches fit nothing under there. How exactly do I get the fan off of the waterpump shaft. I need to get the water pump replaced today.
The truck is a 1999 F250 superduty 7.3L with 135k
Thanks
James

The end of the water pump shaft is finely threaded, right-hand (normal).
Hold the belt "pulley" (that's the real trick) and put a wrench (pipe wrench even works) on the hex surfaces, and turn counter-clockwise. Once it loosens, it shouldn't be real tight, but the initial loosening can be a bear.
Put a piece of cardboard over the radiator fins to protect them from the fan and clutch when it is loosened.
Plan on removing the fan and clutch all as an assembly when you lift out the shroud.

I didn't buy the "special" Ford tools to remove the fan blade. Since my waterpump was shot, I couldn't get the fan off by holding the pulley so I clamped the impeller blade into a vise. Then, I put a pipe wrench on the nut a hit it with a hammer. That will "jar" the nut loose. My impeller looked like a pretzel when I was done but it doesn't matter. My blades eventually broke off (with my help) then I clamped the shaft into the vise. If all else fails, try this method. Good luck.

The fan nut should be a 1 7/8 nut. What I did is removed a couple bolts holding the pully on. I took a piece a steel bar stock, about a 1/4 in thick, 1" wide and about 30 " long and drilled a hole in it about 3" from the end. I then used the bolt from the waterpump pulley and screwed the bar stock on the pulley. It ends up working like a spanner wrench,as you rotate the fan nut the bar stock will jam up and hold the pulley and allow the nut to break free. I did not marr anything up doing it this way. I also had to use a dead blow hammer striking the wrench to get it to break free. 1 very important thing, Don't use the Ford torque for the waterpump mounting bolts! You will snap them off. The correct torque is 18 lbs.-ft. Found out the hard way. Hope this helps and good luck.
