4r100 shudder b/w gears @ hard throttle

I am new to this board and have read through a lot of posts about converter upgrades and shift kits. I just bought a 2001 F250 w/ the 5.4 and 134,000 miles. The transmission will shudder/vibrate/roar bad while shifting during hard throttle takeoffs. It does this b/w 1-2, 2-3, and maybe 3-4 if I ran it hard enough. It also shudders a little when going from 3-4 during normal driving. During normal driving 1-2 & 2-3 is fine. It locks up in third gear fine, maybe a little harsh with a clunk at times. Would this be the converter? Would a shift kit help?

With that many miles ,I'd get the tranny serviced first.
looking for a complete fluid exchange ,including torque converter.
Make sure all upgrades were done.(main valve body ,epc )
And Hopefully nobody put the wrong type atf in it.

FortyFords - what upgrades do you specifically recommend for the 4R100. Mine shifts fine, but has that sloppy stock boulevard shift quality. I'm thinking of installing the Sonnax valve and springs (far cheaper than the Banks Transcommand). What else might I do, besides a fluid and filter change? (I have a '99 V10 auto with 123K on it).

Thanks,

Steve

Thanks for the recommendation. I already changed the fluid, but not the filter as the one I purchased was wrong, and I didn't find out until the pan was off. the filter appeared to be clean, at least what I could see, but I will replace it as soon as I get the right one. The pan was spotless except for the magnet fuzz. I normally do all of my own maintenance, but in this case I may take it to the shop and have the computer codes checked out.

Well, I am not so pleased thus far with my tranny. I ordered and installed a factory tech valve body yesterday morning. To my pleasure, the shudder problem went away at all shift points except going into OD at slow speeds. I guess the quick shifts didn't allow time for shuddering. All was fine. This morning I left the house and drove about a mile, no problem. I took a turn and the fun began. When going from 2nd to 3rd, the transmission binded up and was like I had hit the brakes. I stopped immediately and took off again. Same thing the tranny binded again on the 2-3 shift then went pop. Uh, oh. Now I have no second gear what so ever. Hoping the FTVB was the problem I came home, dropped the pan and installed the factory valve body. I then discovered metal fragments in the pan. Cleaned & reinstalled, no 2nd gear, it goes 1st to 3rd. The tranny is now in the back of my S-10, what a shame, to take to the transmission shop in the morning. I know the owner and he is going to let me help with the rebuild, so I can learn a little someting about this thing. I've owned less than 2 weeks/500 miles. I hope this will be the end of my troubles, after I get the tranny going.

Sorry to hear this
Well to protect your rebuild, you need to flush the cooler lines and the cooler out.Get all floating particles out of the system.ask the shop about it.
Some guys put filters on.

Jasper/Monster Box would not warrant my new tranny if I used the stock in-radiator trans cooler. They said it can not be effectively flushed and was known to have flow issues.

Well the cast iron ring on the sprag broke. The shop said they make a lot of money replacing that part. It was a shame because everything else in the tranny looked brand new. You could still read the part numbers on the clutches. I got an upgrade kit installed that uses the older E4OD style steel piece with the rollers versus the ratchet that is supposedly much better. Their transmissions also come with a transgo kit installed, so I'll be selling my Factory Tech Valve Body. I also got the billet converter upgrade. Other than my time to remove and install, It cost me $1300. I guess it could have been worse. It runs great now. Hopefully, I won't have any more major problems.

My 2005 PSD just turned 2000 miles and it is starting to act up. Shifts from 3rd to OD and jurks like it pops into gear, out of gear, then back in again. You guys have any ideas???

Another weird thing... It seems like it has gained a bunch of power from someplace! Seat-of-the-pants power comes on really strong. What is that all about?!? Is there somekind of factory "break-in" program that cuts out at 2k? I have a 4" Exhaust and AFE stage 2 intake, but they have been on there for a while...

If your torqshift is going from 3rd to overdrive, something very bad is going on...

Its supposed to go from 1st to 2nd to 3rd to 5th to 6th (OD)

You should check for any error codes. Then report back...

Sometimes they set a code even though the light doesn't come on.
