I'm fabricating a full dual exhaust on my 87 F250 460 4x4. I'm using full length Hedman Headers. My plan is to bring the driver's side pipe over to the passenger side and run both pipes beside each other to a pair of mufflers and turn downs in front to the rear axle. I know a lot of people have done it this way, but I was looking at it and I'm not sure where the best place is to cross over. I'm trying to minimize the amount of ground clearance I'm going to lose. The collectors exit next to the bell housing so I can't cross over in the stock location behind the oil pan. I'm thinking I need to cross over either between the trans and transfer case or after the transfer case. Anyone who's done this have any suggestions?
go back behind the transfer case , tha way you wont have to cut if you need to pull either trans or case, do you ahve dual tanks", bob
I would put is further forward. If you ever drop tranny or Tcase , you should drop the exhaust anyway to get it out of your road. Male sure your cross over a one or two sizes smaller than main pipes. You should never used same size.
go back behind the transfer case and go across over the drive shaft , you will eliminate all that extra work of taking the exhuast down later and you will not have to deal with exhuast heat, Ive done several that way and they work fine ,bob
i had a 86 and had headman hedders on it. all i did was take a hedder flange and welded a piece of pipe on it. then i bent it left on a sharp angle and ran it to the passenger side. i definitally wouldnt put it past the drive shaft. but that worked for me. i dont know if its any different underneath because i had the last year of the body style. any exhaust shop could do.
Well it's in. I crossed just behind the trans crossmember under the t-case. I'm going to make a heat shield to protect the t-case linkage and the bottom of the t-case. It came out sweet all mig welded together. That route gave the most ground clearence without too many bends. I haven't heard it yet since I'm still putting the truck together. Can't wait!
Fired it up over Christmas! Sounds great. Now I just have to finish the rest of the truck. Roll eyes! A word to the wise. I used to think every project costs twice as much and takes twice as long as you think it will. Know I know the truth, it costs twice as much and takes 10 times longer that you think it will. Never take a truck down to the frame when you are going to need it a month later!
Band straps make life easy should the trans have to come out. I had a header off and starter in hand under 15 minutes, back together in 30 minutes. This was a side of the road starter replacement with a minimum of tools.
