Post 351W into 79' F-100

I am putting a 351HO out of a 1987 Econoline into my 1979 F-100 that used to hold a 300, straight6. What problems would I be facing. In 1979 they only put 351clevelands in trucks and didn't start with winsors untill 1980. I think motor mounts off a 80 model will fit. Is the Motor compartment the same from a 79 to a 80. WIll headers for a 80 model fit in 79. THe 351Winsor I have is carbrated. I plan on taking all EGR and smog works off since they weren't required on 79' model. Can anyone tell ma anyting....anything at all. thanks

There are NUMEROUS threads about this subject already.

Maybe take some time and scroll through them in this forum.

They go back at least 20 pages.

I dont think that Ford ever put the 351C in trucks, many people have themselves done this swap though. Ford put 351M's in their trucks though for quite a few years. For some reason I think that the I6 towers will work with the 351W, someone please correct me if I am wrong

Vern, Don't know where you are getting your info from, must be some car mag. There were no 351Cs put in trucks or even built in 79. The 351W HO will bolt right up to your tranny with a pre 80 302 perch/mounting setup, no problems.

351W into 79' F-100

I just finished putting a 351 HO in my 79 F100 in January. I had a 302 originally, so i used my same perches and mounts on the 351. If you have all the gear on the front of the engine, use it. Even my power steering pump and bracket mounted to the 351 front with no mods. I used the original radiator (although it has been re-cored thicker) and fan shroud. I wanted to use the thermostat clutch fan from the van, but it was too large, so I used the original from the 302 with no cooling problems. I installed headers from Summit racing that were for the 302, even though Summit said they would not fit. Because of the taller deck height and wider engine, I had to modify the headers by dimpling on the passenger side at the frame, and also grinding about 1/4 inch from the top frame rail. The clearance on the drivers side was close to the steering sector, so I dimpled the tube closest to the sector. Have had no clearance problems yet. I don't know about the fit of 80 model headers. The oil pan is a rear sump and it sits real close to the drag link, but after keeping a close watch, it has yet to rub. The 302 had a front sump pan, but it won't fit the 351. I also used the C-6 from the van, and the 1 piece driveshaft. The driveshaft fit perfect with no lengthening or shortening needed! The rearend came from an 85 truck. The entire swap was pretty strait forward, Nothing that a torch and grinder wouldnt fix. hehe You can see the install in the user gallery under F-100 Ford Lariat and F-100 Ford Lariat (2). If you need more answers or pictures, let me know and i will e-mail em to you. By the way, the dipstick tube will fit through the headers and bolt up with a little creative bending.
