Best intake for OBS...

.... in terms of performance

I'm trying to decide which intake to buy, but I can't make up my mind. I like the better filtration and cost of the Tymar, but can't see how it would offer better performance than the AFE Stage 2 kit. It sounds like the Tymar MAY flow more air, but this air has to be hotter. Just really can't make up my mind....

i have a homemade tymar, it not a kwik but an exact build of the tymar. the kwik and tymar are a great filter for a great price. i think you really can't beat either of them. the performance is great but i have never used the other intakes. no matter which you get you will have more flow and better filtration over stock.

I've got the AFE stage 2 with the Pro 7 filter so I'm prejudice. The concerns with the AFE are price and having to clean the "lifetime" filter, every 30K to 50K highway miles per the mfg's info. It is separated from the engine compartment so there's no concerns with drawing engine heated air. Since we don't have a stock intercooler, every little bit helps. If you go with this one, get the Pro 7 filter. I think it gets better filtration than the Tymar with little added restriction.

The Tymar or homemade Kwik filter are inexpensive compared to the AFE. There is the cost of filter replacement, but the filters aren't that much. The only issue is drawing heated engine compartment air which is only an issue at idle or in stop and go traffic. Heated intake air causes the EGTs to increase. I've read that once the truck is moving normally the EGTs drop rapidly. Can't really tell you any "performance" comparison between the two.

tymar.

you only get the heated air sitting still. i ran thermometers under the hood and sitting it was definately warmer but moving its the same as outside. i dont like cotton gauze filters you can beat the filtration of paper. i live down 4 miles of dirt road so thats a big deal to me. if i was drag racing i would put a un oiled cotton gauze on for runs down the 1/4. also throwing the paper in the trash and grabbing a new one is better for me over cleaning filters.

The Donaldson filters used by the Tymar system were developed for use in open pit mines, on of the dustiest places in the world next to a Sahara sand storm. They work very well

Napa 6637 air filter, i can get a napa filter for cheap since i have a buddy that works there. replace it once a year and never have to worry about it. speaking of... it's time for me to replace it very soon!

I too live down a very dusty 3 mile gravel road. I have the Tymar filter and changed the Donaldson filter recently after 1 year - all clean inside. I also put the stock snorkle back on to help wash the filter with cooler outside air. I don't know if it really makes any difference, but it seems to make sense..... it runs great anyway.

I doubt if anything outflows the AFE stage II. For the money it's hard to beat the big 6637, especially if you build it yourself.

Does anybody have flow numbers for the systems above?

I looked at the 6637 last night and I think it said 425cfm.

What about the donaldson?

The Donaldson and the 6637 are essientially the same filter. They are exactly the same size.

I'm sure any of the AFE vendors on the site would be glad to give you the flow rates for those systems. Just gotta ask.

the 6637 and the donaldson are the same exact filter in different boxes. atleast they were 6 months ago when i got mine. the napa filter had a duralite sticker right on it which is the donaldson name for the media. i have heard that a few have gotten filters lately that the flange is a bit different than they used to be so maybe different now. but i doubt it.
