Greetings and a question
Greetings from Alaska, winter has arived but we still need more snow to play with our snowmachines.....
Now for the question.
I have never had so much trouble shifting my transfer case in my life. When shifting the transfer case in and out of 4 low it will bind and get stuck in gear.
Is this a common problem with the tourque in a diesel engine combined with the auto tranny?
Any tips on shifting in and out of 4 low will be appreciated.
I have a 2005 F350, 6L psd, auto trans, manual transfer case, 4X4, snowplow package.
Regards,
Jim

Jim ,First with the manual transfercase you can't have torque on the drive train when trying to get out of 4L.The auto has to be in N and the truck not rolling on flat ground or it will bind. How many miles on your truck? Living in a harsh enviroment and temps like you have up their,I'd thinking about changing that transfercase fluid to a Mobil1 or type of synthetic atf to help shift a low temps.
Also a silcone spray on the shifter connection to the transfercase might help also
sometimes they pickup some crude around their.
If it continues after the suggestions, take it in your still under warranty maybe .

What kind of snowmobiles you got ? I have 2 skidoo's

Thanks for the reply,
Thats what I have done, put the truck in N and shifted out of 4L. The problem then is I have to turn the truck off to shift back into gear without grinding expensive parts.
Oh well, I guess I have to live with it now. I should have bought the manual tranny. The truck only has about 9,000 miles on it. I'm happy with the truck otherwise.
I have a Skidoo Skandic SWT and a small Tundra for work and play around the place.

Jim

Hmm... only 9K miles, but when was the last time the tranny fluid was checked? is it burnt?
I wonder... if the tranny fluid is shot, that means even in neutral, you'll have some drag on the tranny internals, and put some small amount of torque to the output shaft... lots of times I've seen auto trannies in neutral spin a driveshaft that was hanging loose.
I'd also imagine when the tranny is colder, there is more torque still getting to the output shaft when in neutral. Maybe warm up the truck a bit before trying to get to 4LOW?
Just throwing out theories for others to shoot down
