Question Need Fuel Line Diagram for 86 F250 w/6.9 Diesel...

...

I'm looking at buying a 86 F250 w/6.9 Diesel. I have had the chance to see it yet, but the owner says there is a fuel leak that is originating behind the engine towards the top (near the firewall).

He says it's not leaking near the fuel filter or anywhere underneath the truck.

He's describing it has a steady drip.

Where could this leak be coming from ??

The location he's describing (firewall) is where the primary fuel filter/water separator is located. It's mounted on the driver's side firewall, above the steering column. If the truck has cruise control, it's directly underneath the servo unit. Mine has been replaced with a Racor unit. Happy, happy, happy.

The early trucks had a lot of trouble with the water separator not re seating after pulling the ring to drain it. Many have installed a bolt and clamp in the drain line as it can cause air to be introduced into the fuel system too. If it is not the W/Separator check the line (s) to/from the return line T fitting at the rear drivers side.

Anyone have a pic of the water separator and the return line T-fitting area ???

The return line tee's are pieces on each injector that the rubber fuel line hooks to.
They have two rubber O ring in each cap that get old and start leaking.
Also the rubber fuel lines between each injector gets old and cracks, then it will start leaking.
Ford has an O ring kit of 16 O rings for a few dollars.
You can get some diesel rated fuel line and screw type hose clamps and replace all the lines when you replace the O rings.
Less than a 50 dollar repair to do them all.
I would replace them all at the same time, if you just replace acouple of them, the rest will start leaking the next day after you disturb them.

The return line to the fuel tank comes off the back of the motor near the drivers side rear injector.
That line could be cracked from age where it hooks to the motor.

If the return tees or return lines are leaking, the fuel will run off the back of the valley pan unless it is parked with the front downhill on a fairly steep hill.

The water seperator is on the drivers side in the corner of the engine compartment.
On top of it there is a key ring looking ring you lift to release the water out the bottom.
They do leak air into the fuel system and can leak fuel out the drain valve.

This truck has cruise control on it. The silver bracket is for the cruise, if you do not have cruise the water seperator will be easier to see.
