1949 F6 flathead 8 fit an f1

I have a 1949 F6 parts truck coming to me and was wondering about the engine and trans fitting in my 48 f1. I believe the bodies and all are the same, except for the frame being beefier and the 2 speed rear-end, axles, brakes, etc... Am I correct in saying this?

It's probably a bigger cubic inch V8, but should still fit.

The engine may fit but I think you may run into a problem with the transmission not lining up properly with the F1 crossmember. I shall preface this by making it clear that I do not know this to be true without a doubt, however, I seem to remember seeing a recent thread where somebody wanted to use a transmission from a larger truck in an F1 and they were cautioned about the tranny not lining up with the F1 crossmember.

Do you happen to have the VIN for either or both trucks so we will know which engine you have in the F6 and had in the F1.

As far as body parts from the F6 that will fit the F1 and Vise versa, check out this chart.

Not quite there is a thread on this at the top of the forum. The front fenders are different also the openings are lerger. The cab itself is the same.

The flathead eight is the same for all models until you get to the F-7 and F-8. There were different flat sixes in the F-6s and up.

Same engine and a bolt in swap. the F7 and 8 used the 337 inch flathead Lincoln. The 4spd which was standard on the F6 is a HD option in the F1. There are differences in clutch and flywheel between a light duty column mount 3spd and the 3 & 4spd floor shifted HD options.

thanks for the replies. I don't have the f6 vin yet (still have to get the truck at my uncle-in-laws) there's an F8 dump truck there too that I can have also, but would be a little too heavy for a car trailer. and the f6's trans is a four speed on the floor. The f1 I got was in pieces and didn't come with a motor or tranny. Previous owner was gonna rod it, but I think I'd like to resto-mod it. If the engine and tranny doesn't fit, then maybe I'll restore the f6. kinda wonder how many f6's are out there.

There are some on here that dabble in the big trucks. Parts are ususally harder to find but on the upside, you only have the back of the cab forward to worry about for sheetmetal.

havi,

The bigger trucks are harder to find parts for. The biggest obstacle is wheels, they came with "Widow Maker" split rims which are hard to find someone to work on. They have a tendency to come apart during inflation or deflation if they aren't assembled correctly or if they have deffects. You can find wheels from other trucks that will fit the five hole pattern but they're hard to find. The second thing you have to check on the F-6 is the frame. F-5 and bigger trucks have a double walled frame that likes to develope rust between the two walls. I have had a couple of these trucks that had the frames pull apart from the rust. That's why I went for a F-4 when I wanted a larger truck, F-4s have a single wall frame. JobLot in NY sells brake kits for the larger trucks and you can find other parts like bearing and seals at places that deal in larger trucks or places that sell those type of parts (seal, bearings etc..) they can usually match a part to something they have in inventory.

If I were you what I would do is work on the F-1. The engine from the F-6 will fit the F-1 and install a modern T-5 transmission to get better gearing. There are variety of T-5s to choose from, some better than others. Do a Google search and you will find quite a lot of information on the T-5s. You can buy adapter kits to mount the T-5 behind the flattie or you could keep the first two parts behind the F-6 engine, the starter bellhousing and the clutch bellhousing, and use them to mount a T-5. There is some work to do this but if you mechanically inclined or now someone who is this can be done.

Also, if you can get the other trucks, I would take them apart and salvage all the good parts left. You can either use them on the F-1, most of the sheet metal will fit the F-1 except the front fenders, or sell them to finance the F-1 project.

Good luck,

Bob

And the front fenders will fit F2's, F3's, and F4's.

thanks Bob, Lord knows there's rust up here too. My 1210 IH has fallen into pieces and it hasn't even gone anywhere. Just came apart right where it sat. Does anyone know the gear ratio's of the HD 4 speeds? I have a T5 available, but was kinda saving it for my T-bird. So many projects, so little time. Oh, and how about the inner fenders, are they the same?

Inner fenders are the same. Check out the chart at the top of the main page, there a link to "reference threads", on that page there is another page with a parts interchange chart,
