Front and rear sump

What is the difference in front and rear sumps as far as needing to match when putting in a new or reman block? Will both fit in '72 4x? Also short and long pickup tubes. I'm guessing long pickup tube for sump in the rear. Thanks, Mike

Fordeverpower is absolutely correct. However a front sump will fit on a 76 Highboy. The truck 352 I have in my truck accidently fell off the cherry picker and crushed the rear sump pan. Only fell about 4 feet but a full dress FE is heavy. Only thing I had was a front sump pan, I put that on until I could get a rear sump pan. The one on the 390 I took out of the truck was leaking and I had to have the flanges straightened before I could use it. Only thing is be careful when you're four wheeling, looks like if you stuff the suspension hard the oil pan will say good bye. I have a rear sump on it now.

Rear sump pan puts the pick-up for the oil in the back of the motor for when you are climbing hills.... No oil starvation, or you could add a few baffles to keep the oil up front.

if it's a half ton 72, i've seen the panhard bar hit a front sump pan... a buddy pulled a motor from a 2 wheel drive and just put it straight into the 4x and didnt wanna change the pan and pickup.. hit a water bar pretty hard out wheelin' and the rest is a oily spot in the history books... LOL
