Wont stay running
2001 F250 Superduty 7.3L Diesel w/ 172,000miles - let sit for 1+hrs and truck will start. Letting it sit running will only run till about the time it gets warmed up. If driven it is the same, however to get it home yesturday I kept it in 2nd gear to keep rpms up and after it warmed up it wanted to stall but w/ rpms up it managed to stay running. I replaced the fuel filted and checked for water. Still won't stay running. Any ideas?

How old is the engine oil and is it diesel rated oil? Diesel engine oil has anti-foaming agents in it that will evenually break down. The foaming messes up the high pressure oil delivery for the fuel injectors. I've read of a 2 recent cases where old dino oil caused the PSD to stall. One with 8K on the oil.

My Actron Scanner would only pull a code when I was driving and had it plugged in at the same time. It did CMP

I recently posted a thread on the 94.5-97 PSD forum called CPS TSB where one of the symptoms for a bad CMP/CPS was "starts, runs cold, dies warm, will not restart until cold". I'm assuming this could also happen to post '97 PSDs. If the oil and oil level are OK, I'm going to go with cookie88 and wings, and say it's could be the CMP/CPS. Since it's Sunday, I believe Autozone carries them. About $100. If you can wait they are also available online at Ebay for $50-80.

Rough idle, especially hot:
Could be caused by anti-foaming agent depletion, incorrect oil, or leak at the oil pump pickup tube.
Get the engine and oil hot and run up to 3300 RPM for three minutes. If the ICP reading goes above 1600 within the first thirty seconds of testing there could be a cracked pickup tube or missing seal. The pick-up tube can be checked by adding two quarts of oil to the crankcase and raising the rear of the vehicle approximately ten inches. If the ICP readings at 3300 RPM drop, then the pick-up tube is cracked or leaking.
If at the end of the three minute high RPM test the ICP readings are above 1400 for Federal or 1250 for California and Econoline or 1500 on 99.5, the anti-foaming agents are depleted from the oil or the wrong oil is being used
I found this in my archives of sumptoms, hope it helps
