Choke Setup 79 351m 4bbl Intake

Greetings all!

Just installed a Weiand 4bbl intake on my 351m and I'm in the process of setting up the carb. I'm using a Motorcraft 4bbl from my 460 (one with the smaller secondary as the bigger secondary doesn't fit). The stock manhole cover intake has the heat exchange chamber that hooks to the choke thingy, but the Weiand does not. The choke housing thingy has the hookup for the heat tube and an electric connection, but I have no idea what the elec. thing is.

So...
Is there a way I can hook that up somewhere else or should I just go with a manual choke? And, what is the electronic connector for?

Thanks!

Kevin K.

I think the electricle connector is for an electric choke setup. I personally like my manual choke setup.

the electric hook is to help warm the spring in the choke housing

this was done because the heat tubes became plugged over the years causing
the choke to never release

Thanks guys.

I finally got everything installed and got the truck back together. Sounds and runs TONS better than the crappy 2bbl. I hooked up a manual choke and it works prefectly. The only thing I'm not 100% positive on is the vacuum advance. There were two small tubes coming off the front base of the carb, both of which were capped off. I hooked the VA up to the one on the driver's side, but I can't tell if it's working or not.

Any idea how I make sure it is?

Thanks again!

with the engine running at a idle see if there is suction at the hose you have running to the dist. i believe that ford only wants vaccum above idle.

if you have vaccum at idle try the other port if not slowly reve up the engine
at aprox. 1200 rpm(i think) you should start to get vaccum to the dist.
to check if the advance in the dist is working the best way is with a timing light
and check to see if the timing changes when conn. the hose to the dist.

Thanks cheez!

I know the advance in the dist. works because I set the timing before I started the swap. I did what you said and reved it up while I had the light on it, and the timing changed quite a bit when I'd give 'er.

The problem I'm having is similar to the one I had with my 460/holley 750. It hesitates and backfires through the carb when I stomp on it. I just assumed that it was the VA, but it could be something else. I'm pretty sure the accel. pump is working, but I'll check that tonight.

I think I have a vacuum guage so I'll just hook that up and test for vacuum as well as checking it with the timing light. Any idea how much vac there should be?

Thanks!

with the idle speed and timing set to spec. i think vaccum should be around 18 inch
at the manifold.
as for the backfiring one thing that is almost always overlooked is the temp. in the manifold. make sure that your cross over and exhaust control is working properly
it could also be that the acc. pump is misadjusted and is either puttung to much gas or not enough into the engine. good luck

There is no port into the exhaust crossover on top of the manifold. It goes from head to head and that's it. Is that what you're talking about?

I thought about that, too. The lever on the pump has 3 holes in it to adjust the pivot point (------o-o-o------). Moving the pin increases or decreases how much is pumped each time. I'll have to play with that and see if it makes a difference.

Thanks again.
