Rear brake pad shims MIA!

Rear brake pad shims MIA!
So I'm replacing the rear brake pads on my 2000 F250 SRW. You'd think it would be simple.
The old pads come out and there's a shim between the old inner pad and the pistons. It's in BAD shape and needs to be replaced.
The fiche shows the shim as part of the parts kit (#2200) which also includes the anti-rattle springs and the pads.
The parts guy brings out the kit but there's no shim in it. They're clueless, the service guys swear up and down you don't need it and Ford customer service is useless.
The factory put it in there for a reason when they built it. What should I do, go without it? Is there any way to get a new one? Any tech's got the inside scoop on this?
Thanks,
aa

I'm not sure I entirely understand your response.
Are you saying that if I have a "high quality" pad with a fiber backing then the shim is unecessary?
The pad kit I have is Motorcraft part no. YU2Z-2V200-AA. The pads have a black metal backer riveted on and the pad material is black in color.

You have what you need !
My premium pads are blue painted with a black shim(its actually a heat disapating material) riveted on, that keeps the heat from soaking into the pistons in the caliper.
Don't foget to lube the caliper slide pns (dilectric brake grease)
Also a little neversieze on the brake pad tab that slides in the new slider shoes.

not all brake pads are designed to use shims if they did not come with shims just put some anti squeel on the back of the pads and but them on.
If they were made by Bendix Chances are they will not have shims
Raybestos almost always come with shims.
Wagner thermoquiets have the shim material built into the backing plates they look like two raised bumps.
Hope this helps
