Dry fuel bowl with 1/2 tank

Dry fuel bowl with 1/2 tank
Truck died on freeway. Good thing I had good electric brakes on the trailer and activated them manually as stopping 28,000 lb set with no power brakes didn't leave good impression.
First thing I always check in situation like that is fuel contamination. Opening the drain valve on the fuel bowl show no fuel. I poked around the truck, turning ignition on and off few times and got the fuel coming to the bowl just fine. The engine with dry injectors would not restart easy and I finally used starting fluid to have it running again.
Drove home over 200 miles with no further issues.
Now I am not happy with something like that and want to recheck what that could be. Fuel filter is pretty new and clean, had my tank strainers cleaned over a year ago, but I think I will recheck them.
The only thing I can figure would be
1 Fuel pump having bad wire connection, or just chocking
2. CPS failing for short moment.
I do carry spare CPS, but shall I carry spare pump as well?
Any more ideas?
