K&N cold air kit

Just recently installed a K&N FIPK on my 5.4 3v and I am experincing much louder engine noise when getting on it. Also when it is climbing through second gear I hear a light pinging noise from the valves. Is this normal for this application? Should I use a higher octane gas? If anyone can help let me know, becasue I don't want anything going wrong to my baby.

If you want the best for your baby, put the stock system back on the engine. The K&N allows far too much debris to enter the engine and there have been problems with the oil migrating to the electronics.

You make the popcorn and I'll get the Crown Royal. No sense doing this sober. Here is some info for ya ponder:

Note, the info and test are on a GM Diesel which far exceeds the air requirements of a gas engine.

Have fun!!!!

Flash, i have one issue with that study. The A/C Delco results. I've seen reviews of oil filters performed by this group as well, in the past off of a volvo site, and guess what. The A/C Delco oil filter also outperformed all other filters in that test, including K&N, Mobil1, & Mann (the "premiere" european filters). I find it very hard to believe that A/C Delco makes the best products with regards to both air and oil filters. And yes, I am skeptical of these types of "studies", being that I have some experience with research, albiet healthcare/biotech sector. This study needs to be compared to a few other studies before results can be taken as gospel. Just my 2 cents.

I just took my Airaid off because of the same problem. Called Airaid and they said some F150 have it worse than others. I did not have any pinging.

Well thanks for all your feedback, I removed it today and shipped it back to Summit racing for a full refund! K&N stands behind their product so much that they are giving me my money back.

Are you guys talking about the engine noise as opposed to the pinging? All you're hearing is the throttle body opening, more of a throaty roar of the open cone filter as opposed to the silenced, baffled sealed sound of the stock assembly. It's supposed to sound meaner. The pinging issue is a different story, sounds almost as if your distributorless ignition system advanced the "timing" somehow, perhaps due to increased CFM and colder air from the open filter. Now that may be a good reason to return an upgrade.
