i just moved to a cold climate for the fist time . i have always used 15w40 in all my diesel trucks. [ tampa area ] i now live in southwest new york. i cannot find any 10w30 for my f350 7.3 . can any body tell me where i can find 10w30 ? and why is it so hard to find ? my manual clearly states the use of 10w30 below 32 degrees. thanks for any help.
nygator- Great question. It sometimes can be a real problem finding CI-4 (or CI-4+) diesel rated 10w30 motor oil...Neither Red Line or Royal Purple offer it and I have never seen any CI-4 10w30 at a chain Auto Parts store. Keep in mind that I believe there are only three major brands available: Rotella, Mystik and Motorcraft Super Duty.
The most obvious place is the Ford dealer for the MC- Just be certain it is Super Duty.
Mystik is usually carried at Farm Supply type stores or you could go to their website and check for dealer locations-Do the same for Rotella and/or check at Wally World or local diesel repair shops. All three brands should be readily available, just shop around for best pricing.
Of course, you could always use a 5w40 synthetic which is carried at most Auto Parts stores (& Wally World) in the Rotella and Mobil1 Truck & SUV... Or go to an Oil Distributor (or local Truck Stop) and get Mobil Delvac1 5w40 synthetic. Good luck and let us know how the search goes

utahtom - thanks for the help. all the local tractor stores stock only 15w40. the 2 local ford dealers seemed very confused with my inquiry . i dont think too many people around here have diesel trucks. i know i can order motorcraft oil over the internet. part # xo10w30qsd . i was hoping to find another local source, but i think thats not going to happen. i still cant understand why it is so hard to find. here is a short list of acceptable 10w30 , i just cant find it. cheveron delo 10w30, texaco ursa 10w30, quaker state fci universal 10w30, kendall super d3 10w30, citco mystic jt8 10w30. thanks again.
Just thought I would give ya a heads up. No one certifies cold weights other than 15w (dino & Syn) and 5w (syn only) for diesels. I drive big trucks, and if you could find other weights, they would be in truck stops for sure. 15w40 and 5w40 are all i've seen.
JCWhitney sells magnetic oil warners that stick on your oil pan, I think its a 15-20 minute thing. Just remember to plug in BEFORE you start your truck, and unplug it B4 you leave.
I live in Ga, and we mostly just add Lucas and dont worry about it unless it drops below +10*F. With the 5w40 + Lucas, you should be good down to -5*F, just remember to let the engine warm before revving it over 1000. Also remember that just because the water temp is up to normal doesnt mean the oil temp is above 100. Oil is still concidered 'cold' at 120.
