Anyone watch "dirty jobs" on discovery last night

Did anyone watch "Dirty Jobs" last night on the Discovery channel?
Part of it was about a guy that makes his own biodiesel. He had a pretty extensive set up in a barn and said it costs him about 55 cents a gallon to produce.
One of his vehicles was an 82 datsun that gets 40mpg.
Now that this info is more mainstream, I imagine these older diesels are going to start going up in demand and price.

Great show. I watched it last night and recorded it so I could see it again. Very interesting setup that guy had. I didn't catch if he said what it cost for his mini-refinery but it was sweet!

Thats what I was wondering too. It didn't look like a whole lot of work, or very complicated. But all that equipment looked like it would cost several thou.

They already have gone up in price. Sometime when you have a little time, do an ebay search for some of the early diesel vehicles, like a diesel Ford Ranger or a diesel Escort. The parts for these vehicles are unavailable, but yet one in good condition will easily bring over $2K.

I didn't know they ever made a diesel ford ranger or escort. I think swapping a little 4cyl diesel into a toyota pickup would be a great project. They made diesels but they were never imported into this country commercially.

Sure they did. In the mid 80's, you could order a Ford Ranger with a 4 cyl diesel motor. For one year, ('86, I believe) you could get a Ford Ranger 4 cylinder diesel with a turbo and 4 wheel drive. The Ford Escort was available for a few years with a Mazda built 2.0 liter diesel. Very economical, but don't EVER overheat it. The engine will be gone.
Parked in my garage is an '82 Chevy Chevette diesel that needs engine work. You can't hardly find parts for it, but it was available. The engine was built by ISUZU. This winter I will be getting it running again.
About the same time, GM had the 5.7 diesel in their half ton pickups. That was a complete failure. International put a Mitsubishi diesel in their Scout small trucks. (A rariety)
Back to your Toyota diesel project....Are you sure they never put diesels in them? I think Nissan (Datsun) did. I'll be checking my oil filter application book after I log off.

Toyota made diesel pickups, but they never sold them here in the US. Once in a blue moon I'll see one on e-bay, but it will be on the wrong side of the country. I'm thinking of finding a reliable, easy to find parts for, around 2litre size diesel to mate to a toyota 5 speed. Maybe an early 90s style cab.

I hand fed some of them birds at a ranch and got my thumb bit pretty good. You gotta keep your fingers together and put the food in the middle of your palm so that they wont accidentally snatch a thumb. I learned that the hard way.

I had a 4 banger diesel back in the '80 - I don't doubt the 40mpg number at all!
Those little trucks weigh a lot less than a PSD.

Check out the discussion in the Biodiesel forum below! We've been talking the same topic!

Toyota Diesel's in a landcruiser were available in the late 70's and early 80's. They got about 32 mpg. My Dads friend had one, sold it for next to nothing with 300k Miles. It was rotted out from winter roads and salt, motor was good, 5 sp tranny was very loose but it still all worked.

I used to regularly get 43 mpg going 75 mph in my 1980 VW Dasher diesel.

In the 80's you could get Toyota diesels in the US. It was a Nissan diesel in those scouts
