water pump

I noticed in further inspection of my engine that the left water pump appears to have a bolt missing. There is an open hole below the pully and above the water inlet. The right pump has what appears to be a bolt in it. It looks like there has been some rusty water coming out of this hole at some point, but I have never noticed any leakage in the three or four times I've had it running. From what I can tell through the grill (radiator removed), there is no hole into the block. Is this a bolt that has been broken off? Can coolant escape through this hole? Is this something to be concerned with or will it function properly as is?

Thanks for the info
Jesse

You probably are right about it being a broken bolt in there. If it was mine, I'd remove the water pump and try to remove the broken bolt. If you do remove the pump, don't forget about the 'hidden' bolt inside the water inlet, use a six-point socket and turn the bolts to tighten them a tiny bit before you try to remove them. Good luck. ...Terry
