Exhaust Sound On 4.2???

HEY ALL, THIS IS NO OFFENSE TO ANYONE WITH FLOWMASTER!!
i have a 99 f-150 4x4 and the guy who had it before me put flowmasters on it. my father-in-law has a 99 chevy silverado v8 with dual exhaust, not sure by who. i would like to get close to the DEEP EXHAUST sound he has got. i know it wont sound like his being mine is a v6,but what is better than this "bee in a coffee can" sound mine seems to have when i give it thottle? at idle it sounds good, just not going down the road. any help please? thanks all

rhino_160, I'm guessing from the plural "flowmasters" that your truck has duals on it. I've had two 4.2L's in the past, and I've put a flowmaster 40 series muffler on each of them. BUT I did not go with duals. I simply went with 3" pipe from the Y-pipe back, into the 40 series, and one 3" pipe out at the stock location. It doesn't really look any different from stock, except for that the pipe is a little bigger, but it sounded really good in my opinion. In my opinion the duals seem to split your sound in half, and when you've only got 6 cylinders to work with, it sounds kinda crappy. Most people thought mine were V8's. It wasn't as loud as some V8's, but it definitely sounded a lot better than a "bee in a coffee can", and I know exactly what you're talking about.

I have a 2003 F150 XL, v6, 4.2. I put only the Series 40 Flowmaster muffler on, shortly after I got the truck. The rest of the exhaust was too new.

I like the sound, slight rumble, but not overboard. At times, it definitely sounds like a v8, albeit a small one.

with a 4.2 you could probably get away with no mufflers.... that would sound pretty good

the thing is, i dont want any back firing or popping noises when i let off the gas. and i dont want it to be real loud or anything. i just want a nice, deep rumble when i get on the throttle that is clean, and makes my 4.2 sound like it has a set of *****. any more suggestions?

Magnaflow cat back system.
I love mine, and it sounds like its exactly what you are looking for.
Just my 2 cents of course.

that is my problem, i dont know what to go to with due to i havent heard any around here. i just am afraid of the popping noises and the loudness that might occur. i cant stand what i have now and dont want to spend alot of money and it still not be right. someone told me the 3" single pipe would be too loud, so i dont know what to go with now.

rhino_160, I really don't think the 3" pipe will be too loud for you. Like I said, I've had two of them, and I loved them, both deep mellow tones, not too loud at all - just right. The 3" pipe doesn't really make it any louder, I did that for the increase in flow - performance.

truckalpers, also that setup didnt have the popping sound or "girgling" sound when you let off the gas did it?okay, i am going to check on it this week at the only dealer i know of that sells flowmasters at a place called Maxi Muffler. i will see what kind of price they will give me. do you think i can get anything money wise out of the dual flowmasters that are on the truck right now? thanks again all

rhino_160, all I can say about the gurgling is, both of mine were manual transmissions, and the only gurgling that happened was when I would downshift. I don't think you'll have any problem if yours is an auto, and if it's a manual, it's only going to happen if you do a lot of compression braking. As far as getting anything for the existing flows, if they are three inch inlet and three inch single outlet, just use one of those on your new exhaust instead of buying a new one. But since they're set up as duals, I'm guessing they are probably something like 2.5" diameter inlets and exits. I'm not sure what you could do, maybe put them up for sale on eBay, somebody will buy them, but probably just the mufflers, not the pipe - but you never know.

you dont want to open up your pipes too big though, cause you lose your low end power. i just added a 40 series flowmater to 4.2 and it sounds real good. it is not as load as a v8, but it has the same sound. the plus side is you wont get that annoying hum that the 40 seriers gives the v8
