Start problem Explorer 97
When i stopped the car it was ok. After some hours when i tried to start, the startmotor runs but no more. I thougt it was the fuel pump because i had power on top of the tank, but the pump was quiet. Ordered a fuelpump from germany (no one in stock in sweden) but still the same problem. There is arelay on top of the tank which i now have shortened so i have put power direct on the fuelpump, fuelpressure ok but it seems like i have no ignition instead. I think it must be somthing with the centrallock/ignition lock thet is killing the power somewhere. The doorlocks are working and the locksymbol in the instrumentpanel goes off so it seems be working but it still wont start and i think it is electrical problem, but where??

Some Explorers, including mine lately, have experienced INTERMITTENT failure to kick over....meaning everything is fine for weeks/months, then one day it cranks just fine, but doesn't kick over or even seem like it wants to try. You'll need to read up on past posts cause different people have had different luck with EEC relay, fuel pump relay, bad connection at the PCM. Mechanics won't be able to help unless it's doing it when in their hands. Someone recently told me that when you first turn the key and the dash lights come on, check to see if the "check engine" light is on. If not, try to start it. If it just cranks, that's a sign it has something to do with the PCM or connections.

When you turn the key to the 'on' position (but don't crank it), you should hear the fuel pump prime for about 2 seconds. If you don't hear that, then it's a fuel delivery problem. As the previous post indicated, it could be the fuel pump relay or the PCM relay. Also check and make sure the inertia switch hasn't tripped, and that the plug on the bottom of it is secure. These are all very cheap and easy fixes... especially compared to installing a new fuel pump.

I have alredy changed the fuel pump and shorted the relay so i have fuel pressure now. I need som emeasure points to see if i have power to the ignition or if it is totally dead.
Is there somewhere in this forum there i can download electric schema and try to find out where the circuit for the (as i think) theft starter block is. Has anyone had problems with the key, because i have read in a forum that there is something in the ignition lock recognising the key and in connection with teh remote control for doorlock and alarm.
Is there one or two frequencys sent from the remote control when pressing?

not really sure on what specifically it is, maybe someone can chime in. i had it taken to a mechanic, and he told me right away that thats what it was... same guy had previously replaced the starter and battery cables. i'm pretty sure its what you stick your key into in the steering column.

The only way to change the tumbler is to change the entire ignition scwitch this needs to be done in a shop if you have the securlock system. It must be a ford dealer. You will need to provide them all of your keys and remotes. Then they will install a new ignition switch and reprogram all of your keys to fit the new switch. This can be costly. State side the average cost to program a key and remote is $25.00 a set. That is if this is your problem

yours shouldnt have the securlock feature........ i have a 97 XLT and its just the regular keys. had a mustang that had securlock and you could tell the keys were bigger and had the little wavy line symbol. but thats neither here or there..... i almost bet you that its the tumbler. as in a replacement of the whole ignition would fix it. i cant say for certain, but seeing these problems in explorers before, its the ignition.

Perhaps a language problem for me. Does thje starter turn the enigne when you turn the key to start the vehicle. If no, cehck battery connections.
If yes, there is a fuel cut-off switch located behind the passenger side kick panel that may have been activated and needds to be reset. Another problem may be a plugged fuel filter which may be what causes that fuel cut-off switch to activate. I juust don't remeber. It's been a while.
This may not be your problem but I've given you mtwo very inexpensive possiblilities. Also, check the fuses inside and in the engine compartment. One for the fuel pump may have blown.
Good luck,

I have checked the fuel cut off switch, and that is okay. I have my questions about the ignition lock and i will check everything regarding the ignition lock this morning. i just wonder if there is some electronics in the key the ca be a hell......
I haver downloade Fords complete service manual so i have something to do tomorrow. And i promise you, sweden is not so warm these days, although we dont have the great storms like you but we dont have the heat either.
But a warm jacket and get it on. I WILL FIX IT IN SOME WAY....
