1948-1960: 1949/1950 VIN # Cut off
#1006
You do realize that whether it's an F5 (1 1/2 ton) or an F6 (2 ton) it is a large truck, not something to be converted into a pick up truck, right? It will have 20" widowmaker wheels, among other issues.

I think I picked it up relatively low $$$.
Any tips....

I was able to find the vin number stamped on the frame and did confirm it to be *98RC*372615. Thanks for the picture showing me where to look. It was so faint that even when I knew where it was located, it was extremely hard to find and even harder to read. The "6" is virtually gone and I have to assume it is a 6 from the other tags on the truck. Thanks again!

I have so far collected 27 serial numbers from 10 different plants and it does indeed appear that each plant did run their own serial number string.

vin pic
Here's the pic. From what I can tell this truck title history all had 87HT29396 on them. And if someone was going to forge the stamp, I'd hope they'd either match the title or do a better job Anyone seen this format before. I've read on other sites that the VIN could be on the driver's side and the format's could be different. Thanx.

The frame stamp looks legit, to me. Just not correct. Your title would have the correct format, with year, engine code, series code and unit number. Whoever was doing the frame stamping that day must have had a little too much nip from the flask at lunch, and got confused with the stars and letters. Mis-stampings are not common, but not unusual.

1949 F1
I have a 1949 F1 Flat Head V8 that has been in the family for about 30 years, the last 25 parked in a garage. Im trying to get it road worthy. The truck is stock and i plan to keep it stock except for the single master cylinder for safety, i had to use the hand brake to avoid wrecking the truck once! The numbers on glove box tag, firewall tag and frame rail all match. The V8 has 8BA on both heads and 8BA-8RT on intake with a small metal tag attached to left head by 2 small screws that has 6149 stamped on it. I think the truck is all original except for paint and upolstery.
1. 1949
2. 98RC-230991- HP
3. Raised panels on bed
4. Original Bed
5. 3 speed
6. Floor shifter
7. I can not find any numbers stamped on the fire wall as seems to be with most Highland Park MI built trucks. If you know where others have found these I would be happy to look further.

The 48-50 'doghouse' was virtually unchanged, other than grill colors.
If you haven't already, you should get a copy of the Shop manual, either in print or now available on CD. They are available from several sources.

It has probably 98% of the part numbers as well as some great detailed illustrations. It's available on CD so you can load it directly to your computer.

Use the search option at the top right of the main page for this group for 'widow maker', you should find several post by Truckdog (Stu) regarding wheel options. Napa actually carries a lot of parts for your truck, but if you can't find something start a new thread and ask questions.
