tell the dif between 400 351m ?
what is the easiest way to tell the difference?

valvecover or do a stroke test. They is no super easy way that I know about. Its like a 360 and 390, you have to measure the stroke.

what does the valve cover have to tell the diff?
the crank is getting ready to come out is there a casting number that can be used?

In that case, measure the stroke from the underside.
4 =400 3.5=351

1K is the crank casting # for a 351M. 5M, 5MA, 5MAB are casting #s for the 400.

it's on the first counterweight of the crankshaft. 1K or 5M

The valve cover often has a sticker with the engine size.

did you drop the pan? after all these years any valvecover/sticker could be on there.

no the crank is now in my garage (out) the motor is now striped to the bare block

unless someone changes valve covers on you... found out the hard way on that one...
