400 to 302 Swap 79 f-150 4x4

I've read some bad press about swapping a 302 in to a truck, it seems that the 300, 351w,m,c, 400 and 385 and FE's are a better choice. But, I have a 79' F150 4x4 SWB that has a 400 and 4 speed (T-18 to be exact), 4:11 gears and the motor is shot. I have the 5.0 short block that is balanced and blue printed, has forged pistons and has about 5K street miles that is sitting out of my now departed 92' GT Mustang making about 320hp/300 ft/lbs. I'd like to know if I can swap this out, Mechanically that is, I plan on running a carb and know how to wire it up. If you think this is a bad swap, tell me why, Ford put a lot of 5.0/302 in F-150's thru out he 80's and 90's. This truck is not a daily driver, I do not tow, it is for use to the local Home Depot, small trips to the Dump, picking up car parts and the few hunting, camping and 4x4 trips I make. I'm new to the board, but not to auto's, and I did do a search first.

Thanks,

Dan

This would be an good swap...You'll need a bellhousing for a 302, 300-6, 351W. Motor mounts and towers, towers should be the same from your 400, the 302 mounts from a 2wd should work... I know the car ones will. You can use all the same linkage wiring, but you will need a 302 specific distributor. You'll need a power steering bracket, alternator is the same... the accesories are the same. You'll need a different fan shroud. Radiator is the same...

I can't think of much else...

Welcome to FTE!

Matts72, thanks for the info. I'd like to build the 400, but it need a complete rebuild and I have the 5.0 ready and was a great performer in my Mustang. I'd rather use it then see it sit and go to waste. I put a lot of money in it.

Thanks,

Dan

There are a lot of really good buildups on 400s in the 335 forum... a person could build a very stout 400 for under $2k if that is in your budget. I have built one of these and mine makes 365 horses and 435 ft/lbs.
