transmission clunk
This weekend we had a horrific snow storm here in Colorado, The truck drove fine in four hi. But when I went to four lo to pull my daughter out of a ditch (it also worked fine) when she was out and I switched it back to 4 HI, nothing happen, then driving down the road about 50 feet there was a loud clunk felt like I lost the transmission. then she drove fine.
question is there a procedure like backing up so far after you switch from 4Lo or did I mess something up in there. I don't want to even try 4 lo again. any opinions ?
It's a 2000 F150 Supercab.
Just so you know I lost 4 mpg while in 4hi

Had the same thing happen to me once when going out of 4 Low, and having the truck in gear. After that incident, i always take it out of gear now and into nuetral , then shift the 4 low , wait to feel disengagement(and Low Range light to go out) and then put the truck back into gear. Problem free since . I know with some of the old 4x4's that had the locking hubs on the axle it required you to back up after disengaging the 4x4.My owners manual says that you can shift into 4 high at a stop or up to 55 miles an hour and back to 2 H at any foward speed, but when shifting into and out of 4 Low the vehicle must be at a complete stop and the brake pedal must be depressed. Doesnt say anything about backing up.

Itried it when I got home tonight, when it engagedthere was slight clunk (you could tell it was ingaged drove forward about 50 feet stope back into nuetral and switched back to 4 Hi slight clunk again then light went out. Should I feel a slight clunk is that normal. Iguess I could live with that.

It is normal, I would not worry about it. I take my truck in the sand a lot, and when I pull people out mine sometimes does that. Low Range is driven by a chain, and if it does not fully disengauged the chain will bind, and then pop when it comes out. It is fine and you did not hurt anything. Pull off into some mud os snow, put it back into 4 low, make sure to stop when you engage, and disengage. So, normal noise....
