Im sorry if this has been answered, I tried searching and couldnt find an exact match for my issue.
I purchased my 04 4.0l supercab last december, brand new.
About a 2 months ago I went to a restaurant, after driving the truck most of the day. When I returned to the truck after eating and attempted to start the engine, it felt like it started initially, then sputtered and died. The second through 5th attempts produced the same result. This being a new vehicle with less than 7000 miles on it, i decided to call ford's roadside assistance to come tow the truck. After I hung up with them, I tried one more time to start the truck...of course it started like new and I cancelled the tow.
Last week, the same thing happened again, luckily this time I was in my driveway and I was able to take my fathers car to a wedding that I was going to. After the wedding I attempted to start the truck and sure enough it started right up.
I brought the truck into the dealership and explained my situation. The representative told me that this is a common problem, and that it is probably the fuel pump. When I recieved my truck back from the dealer, I was told that they couldnt recreate the problem, and therefore nothing was done. I was told that if this happens within a few miles of the dealership, i should call them to have a technician come out and perform onsite testing.
At this point what should I do? I cant recreate the problem, and they wont fix it based on my description and I generally dont drive by the dealership.
Has anyone else experienced this problem? How do I fix this?
Im not looking forward to this winter, if its a fuel system problem I can only assume that this will get worse.
I did have a related problem like yours a while back and this is what i did. changed the air filter and fuel filter and my truck came to life. sometimes when the engine is hot it wont start and fuel is not reaching to give a good spark. hope this helps
Political Correctness is a doctrine, fostered by a delusional, illogical minority, and rabidly promoted by an unscrupulous mainstream media, which holds forth the proposition that it is entirely possible to pick up a turd by the clean end.
Given the history of the component, this sounds like another candidate for a bad EEC or FP relay. Intermittent no starts due to a bad contact inside of them are an "occasional" problem.
Have the service manager drive the truck for about a 30 mile round trip back to the dealership and try to start it. I know nobody wants the miles (or gas use!), but sometimes its the only way to replicate the problem. I had to have them do the same thing when my transmission started slipping.

Well it happened again...This time it wouldnt start at all even after an hour waiting for the Roadside Assistance tow truck. I was told to call the dealership if i was nearby so they could have a technician come out and perform an onsite test while the truck was acting up. Tonight I called around 7:30 pm when this first happened, well before they close, and I was told that because they were so dead tonight they had sent all the technicians home and had none to send. Then she said "you aren't going to need a loaner car tonight are you? 'Cause I dont have any to give you tonight." The earliest they could get me a loaner is tomorrow. 7500 miles on the truck and this is happening. I had 20,000 on my S10 and never had a problem. Never getting a Ford again!
Now now, I understand that you're upset - but 7:30 is a little late for service, or a loaner. I've had some problems with my Ranger as well, but its been minor stuff that has been fixed once it was diagnosed. Follow the instructions in my previous post, and I'm sure your problem can be readily fixed. By the way, the 3 year 36,000 mile warranty doesn't even provide for a loaner - the fact that they would even offer says that they want to help!

They probably are not "providing" one, I believe I would have to pay for the loaner, and the dealership closes at 9 on wednesdays. I just called them this morning and of course the truck started fine and they are running tests again, which will probably show nothing is wrong...again. I thought fuel injection and electronic ignitions were supposed to solve these problems? This is a brand new vehicle. Now, Im not saying I dont love the truck, but come awn.
