My 1996 460 use to ping on regular with the timing set at 10 degrees. Changing the thermostat to a 180 degree had little effect.
First make sure your engine is in tune and your EGR system is working properly.
I solved my pinging problem by installing an adjustable fuel pressure regulator and gauge and set the fuel pressure to 41 psi. I can now run 12 degrees of timing with regular gas, AC on plus tow a load.

Thats interesting that adding an adjustable FPR solved the problem. The factory fuel pressure for '93+ was 41psi, '88-92 it was 39psi. With that being said, possibly the stock FPR had gone south and not delivering what it should, thats my only thought. On a side note, my '88 EFI 460 has pinged on 87 octane since the day it was new. I have tried several things to resolve this, but the best thing I have found so far is to run 89 octane, I forget what my timing is set at now, but I believe its around 12* and it runs like a champ.
