Knocking at start up

I have a 5.4 motor in my F250 with 78000 miles on the clock and still under a power train warnety.

After the truck sit for a day next time I start it it has a knock in the motor do you think ford will fix this or just give me the run around and the song and dance show or will they fix this.

Hmmm, let's see: "Hello my honey, hello my baby, hello my ragtime gal"... I vote song and dance, but in the meantime you can check the air flow sensor in the air filter housing. If it's dirty, get some electronics cleaner (from Office Depot, Office Max, or similar) for about $6 and spray that sensor clean. See if that doesn't help. I have the same truck/motor now with 94K miles. I had the same problem you're describing about 20K ago. I sprayed it (and now check it every oil change), and cleaned it... no more knocking!

Or, you CAN take it to Ford and hear what they have to say, while you suggest they look at the mass air flow sensor. See if they'll fix it under warranty...

Good luck,
Daryl

Maybe the engine has loose clearances inside and the oil has drained from sitting so that the knock is from lack of oil until the pressure builds up.

well the knock you are describing is not electrical related. it is from the anti drain back valve in the oil filter. this is a problem. that is why the oil filters these use are special. the motorcraft filter has a silicone valve to seal . the aftermarket ones like fram and others that use the regular black rubber leak and allow the filter to drain back into the pan. so the noise is the engine starving of oil on startup. use the correct filter and see what happens.

You may also have the dreaded piston slap!
on cold start up,there were filters on the market that did have problems with anti drain back valves as 390 said
I would look at the top of this forum at a sticky from Ceejer I think
read that thread it will explain the problem further.
