L&L Clutch & Flywheel kit

I was wondering if anyone here that has bought the L&L kit ever compared or measured the flywheel and clutch before installation? I just downloaded the Centerforce catalog and they have 2 flywheels listed for a 390, one is listed as a 360, 390, and 427 with 184 tooth flywheel PN 700260 and the other is listed as a 390, 429, and 460 with a 176 tooth ring gear PN 700280. Both are zero balance and both are listed as accepting the same size clutches and pressure plates. So which one should be used for a '69 460 swap into a 78 F-250? I am swithcing from an auto to a 4 spd and have a 400 bellhousing. Thanks, Dave

I am not sure about the centerforce flywheel's but i ordered an oem 390 flywheel for my '69 429 cobra jet to 78 F-250 swap and i am pretty sure it was the 176 tooth ring gear. I then bought the 12" clutch form a 460 and it bolted up. Let me tell you somthing about the pilot bearing; if you go into an auto parts store or order a clutch kit, chances are they will send you the wrong one. Look at the crankshaft where the bearing/bushing goes. Is there two holes; the bigger one (which you get by application) is about 1.8625" and the smaller about 1.252" ? Instead of getting a spacer for the bell housing, I got a bearing custom made for the inner hole since there was a gap between the bell housing and the engine. This only cost me $20 and fit perfect! Let me know if you need more info on any parts of the swap, i did the same swap. I got pics, auto cad drawings and specs of the bearing if you need

Thanks ivanvel, what year/make/model flywheel did you get? I called the shop that does my machine work and im gonna try something different. When I bought the bellhousing and tranny i also got a good clutch and flywheel from a 400, after looking the flywheel over I noticed the 400 flywheel has a 176 tooth ring gear on it and will fit a 460 crank(incidently, it appears to be the same spec for a 1983-1987 460 flywheel). So im going to have the machine shop resurface the flywheel and machine the 28 oz weight off and make it zero balance, the owner said hed only charge roughly(estimate) 40 dollars to do it. So im gonna hold off on buying the flywhel until we see what happens with this one.
As for the pilot bearing, ive read on here that a 302 bushing or bearing will fit into the second hole in tha 460 crank without any machining or custom parts.
By the way that is a nice truck you have and the pic of the engine is killer!
is that a front sump oil pan on it? If it is a front sump I am wondering if youve had any oiling problems with it? THanks, Dave

I got the flywheel from a 73 f-250 2wd. thanks for the comments on my truck, actually i haven't yet stated it.. its all ready except for the headers. I ordered L&L headers from bronco graveyard more than a month ago and L&L is supposed to drop ship but are taking very long. I will keep you updated on the oiling system. thanks

Whatever flywheel you go with you have to have the rotating assembly balanced to match your flywheel and harmonic balancer.

I'd go with the 176 tooth ring gear, that way you can easily find a starter.

Even if I use the L&L clutch and flywheel kit I'd have to take the engine apart to have the rotating assembly balanced? Man thats a lotta money I dont have. I thought since I was putting a neutral balanced flywheel on a neutral balanced rotating assembly I wouldnt have to do that. Do we have to do that even when we replace a flywheel, like the replacement ones from the parts stores? I see people do that all the time and they dont rebalance their rotating assemblies. Can anyone clarify this for me?

If you want your motor to last you will... call up any engine machinist, they'll tell you the same thing...
