New Truck-Towing

Well my new truck has come in (06 V10 Lariat with 4.30 rear). I can't wait since this is replacing a 2004 0.6 PSD. I am wondering how long or how many miles need to be on it before I tow? I have to tow my 10,000 lb 5th wheel about 45 minutes away. What do you think?

When I bought my DRW I was in OR I put 450 miles on it and pulled my 5ver home 12K at that time. The truck still runs great just take it easy for the first 10K miles.

RVtraveler, Great news . I hope you love that new truck. I think the manual says 500 miles before towing . Good luck and enjoy that V10.

I do not subscribe to the over generalized wisdom of "500 miles and you are good to go". This causes too many folks to drive off the lot and out for a quick 8 hours of logging miles. My attitude is that many, many, many hot to cold to hot cycles are much better for a new motor.

I semi agree with the 500 mile mark before adding a significant load. But try to get as many cool down periods in as possible. Don't forget to do some reverse gear work and exercise the 4x4 also. Most of us here seem to agree that these motors do not feel broken in until between 6000 and 10,000 miles. Much of that is drive train drag. Lot of real big beefy parts on these trucks. Enjoy and many BSEG days in your future.

I have the 06 F350 Lariat CC. I finally towed my 32ft Jayco Travel Trailer this weekend. I had 3K miles on it. I took Fredvon4's advice to do a good solid break-in before I put it to work. I want to keep it at least 200K miles. It is a GREAT tow vehicle. Enjoy!!

Pulled a trailer about 1k after gettin the truck. I couldnt believe how much more repsonsive the truck was unloaded after working it a little bit. She pulled it fine. I also the oil change right before I left on my towing trip.

I agree with TC42. After the trip, the gas millage seemed to improve (!) and little and she ran even smoother.
