I do not subscribe to the over generalized wisdom of "500 miles and you are good to go". This causes too many folks to drive off the lot and out for a quick 8 hours of logging miles. My attitude is that many, many, many hot to cold to hot cycles are much better for a new motor.
I semi agree with the 500 mile mark before adding a significant load. But try to get as many cool down periods in as possible. Don't forget to do some reverse gear work and exercise the 4x4 also. Most of us here seem to agree that these motors do not feel broken in until between 6000 and 10,000 miles. Much of that is drive train drag. Lot of real big beefy parts on these trucks. Enjoy and many BSEG days in your future.
