Y-block ID help

I just bought a 53 F-750, and I am not sure of which motor it is. I have the vin, but can't find a website that shows the vin breakdown of the F-700 and larger. They all seem to nly cover up to the F-600. any how, the vin is as follows:

F75J3H18004

If any one can please help me, that would be wonderful. I do know that it is the original engine, and it only has 6874.5 original miles.

i have, and the info there is some what confusing. The casting numbers and year info he posted on his site say that it is either a 279, or 317, but it then says that one is not available until 54, but both were available from 52 to 57.

I did get the photos, and I've been soooo busy. I actually needed the passenger side more than the driver, and there was too musch rust for me to want to try and repair. And yes, the big trucks had either the 279, or 317. I am just not finding enough sites that can tell me for sure by the vin number. If I had the casting number, I could probably find out better, but the truck is in Iowa, and I have made arrangements to get it in February.

OK, I just checked Georges Earls World, and he has all of the info for all of the vin digits. I think he is the only one. His spec sheet shows VIN code "J" to be a 279 Lincoln OHV.

hello; yes the 63 f-700 would have been a 292, but the 53 f-750 was either the 279 or the 317 linc. based motor. the linc. motor is easy to identify by the two ribbs on either side of the bolts on the valve covers, also they had side by side ports instead of stacked like the 292's. if it's an overhead v-8, 53 and older would have to be a linc. based motor, they didn't come out with the ford y-block untill 54. hope this helps, wayne.
