The only idea I can think of that for some reason the solid state receiver (FM part) wast toasted somehow. The only way to fix is replace. Stock Tape decks are cheap on e-bay, don't pay more than $20 for one.

Probably the FM demoudulation IC since the AM Band is still functioning the AMP is still in good shape.

No choice but to replace the deck in any case since the IC is proprietary and you can't get it anywhere as far as I know.

sounds like a weird question...but, did you check the antenna lead? AM uses a different one than the FM. just a thought.

Ha! Great question on the FM antenna lead. Where would I look for that? Assume it plugs in to the back of the receiver somewhere.

yes, it's about the size of a cable TV cable....slightly smaller maybe. will be seperate from the main radio harness. in fact it's usually totally seperate, not hooked to anything else at all. hope this helps.

there's a picture of it here. it's the wire with the string on it in the second pic.

Xuzme - Haven't looked at it yet to figure out how to pull the unit to check the cable. Probably this weekend. Any tips on how to pull the unit?

Heres the procedure the special tool used to remove the radio can be substituted by two bent coat hangers.

Removal

1. Disconnect the battery ground cable (14301).

2. Remove instrument panel (04320).

3. Insert Radio Removing Tool T87P-19061-A into tool insertion holes on the edge of the radio face plate. Press in 25.4mm (1 inch) to release radio retaining clips. Pull radio chassis (18806) from instrument panel using tool as handles.

4. Disconnect the radio antenna lead in cable (18812) and wiring connectors (14487).

Installation

If radio chassis is being replaced, transfer support to new radio chassis.

1. Connect the radio antenna lead in cable andwiring connectors.

2. Position the radio chassis in the instrument panel and slide the radio chassis on the instrument cluster control mounting plate until holding brackets engage.

3. Install finish panel.

4. Connect the battery ground cable.

5. Check the operation of the radio chassis and engine (6007).

6. Reset clock.

awesome, krankshaft. thanks for the diagrams. I can't do that yet as no paypal account. problems while swapping banks has left me without one for the time being. once I get everything worked out, I plan on getting the 3yr membership. lol, can always use a new shirt.

OK, have got this far and have my wire hanger as the substitute tool, but cannot figure which holes to insert into. There are four holes, 2 top - 2 bottom, on the face plate, and what look like two pop rivets underneath the radio. Have tried all with no success.
