i personally owne a 04 ranger with a 4 banger. one of the buffest trucks i ever drove.
next to my 99 psd. once i towed my brother -in-laws 93 f-250 x-cab 4x4 to the shop for repairs. i burt the clutch a lil but still towed @ 45 on the expressway. my 04 ranger is a beast! anyone that says anything diffrent about the ranger is just talking nonsence if you ask me.

I second that Brolli. I've done a heck of a lot with my ranger, and most of it has been wayy over its limits lol.

me and a few friends have rangers with 4 cy. they will last forever if you take care of it. or last only untill you pay if off if you put it threw what we do. Mine is a work truck and i use it as such. And if the days work calls for a bigger truck but one is not there then i'll use it. Just dont let any police see me.

how would the 2.3L 5spd handle 31 inch tires? They come with 4.10s but the stock tires are 27.5 inches? 70 miles freeway 40 miles city drivin and offroad up and down 10% hills...per day

I think you would use as much or more gas as a V6 truck and power would be marginal unless gearing was restored to the equivelant of 4.10 with the 27.5 inch tire.

Looks like 4.56 to 4.88 would get me back in the stock range (4.10). I anticipate wearing the clutch faster, but would like to get by without swapping gears. That expense alone would offset any mileage gain and money savings offered by the 4-banger.

Thumbs up Enough Power?

After all the considerations posted here, the bottom line is:

While gas + oil prices skyrocket, it will all come down to who can afford to pay
the operating cost of a big 6 or 8 cyl. and building a 4-banger won't be a thought but become a necessity!

As Americans, we all must learn how to conserve natural resources and stop being glutonus consumers of petrolium produsts.

Horespower is fastly becoming a thing of the past and alternative sources of power will and are being creating and the consumer beware!

By the time when ALL vehicles are running on alternative power, we will all wish that we had, at least, the ball-less 4 banger...with the little power that it produces stock!

THIS IS OUR REALITY...LIKE IT OR NOT!!

actually you really should check your fact.

1. we pay less for gas than canada mexico, or any other country.
2. ford built a supercharded hydro car that puts out about 150 horses. and it is a
four banger.

the bottom line is they have the tech to build a car the can operate off batterys, but y there is so much money in oil to be spread around. look at the sataliltes in outter space. they ran for the last 30 or so years on batteriesl and solar panels. and thier technology is out dated.

we can all have our hydrogen cars tomarrow if the dam poloticaians would get out of the oil companys pockets.

don't know bout ya'll, but i think that the next best energy source woule be E85 and bio diesel. renewable resources and cheap also. not to mention it would build our economy since we would be making our own fuel and not buying it like we are today.

what about all the petroleum and energy it takes to run farm equipment to produce grains for alcohol and corn for vegetable oil. Dino oil is the cheapest and most efficienct. Solar or nuclear power is the future...
