84 Bronco for 16 yr old 1St truck
I work in a high-rise building and have noticed an older Bronco in the basement that is very seldom driven. I found the owner and asked if he wanted to sell. The truck has 74K miles, 4x4, 350V8 and is in overall good condition. I have three questions, 1) is this a truck my newly licensed 16 year old daughter can handle? 2) what is the value of a truck like this? and 3) driving the truck 20 miles a day what kind of repairs and maintenance can I expect?

Hey MR. dwoehr, you know your daughter better than we do, so here's my 2 cents. Personally, buy it. A 16 year old in a big bronco? better chances of surviving any kind of accident. Also, 20 miles a day ain't nothing, and as far as maintainance goes, should'nt be anymore than any other car or truck, unless there's alot of 4x4ing being done. And if there was alot, then just replace the front bearings more often than usuall, changing the diff. oils more regular to make sure your seals are not letting water in them. Other than that the usuall maintainance will last her a long time. I own a "78 bronco and would'nt trade it for nothing. Does everything on this '84 work? make sure everything does, and if your lucky they should have a maintainance record. But, not always. Well, my 2 cents is spent, but im sure there will be others posting soon, Good Luck. Rob

Could be a good starter vehicle for her. But please have a local mechanic check out the suspension and u-joints and the steering box..besides the usual engine and transfer case/tranny. really need to drive it a bit to see how much work it needs..ball joints..etc..hard to price it...you can search the classifieds here for a similar bronco.

when i was 16 i bought an 84 bronco, had to put an engine in it, and i loved it they are big and tough but still nimble enough to park anywhere a car can. mine had a 302/4gear/3.55's and i got around 13-14mpg the only thing i had problems with was the driveshaft and a set of upper balljoints.
as a matter of fact, as i speak, im trading my ranger, just to get that bronco back! i cant wait to drive it again!

One thing I would check on is insurance, when I talked to my agent about my 16 year old son, they said stay away from 4x4's, Mustangs, Camaros, suv's. We bought him a 98 Ranger 4x2, 4cyl. 5spd. and it's still $1800.00 a yr. liability only.
