I am getting a 2000 ranger and was wondering what the flex fuel engine is and how it works. It has the little leaf badge on the tailgate.
thanks for all your help

FFV means it will run ok on E85 fuel, which is 85% ethanol alcohol. Some of the differences are stainless steel fuel components, larger fuel injectors, a E85 sensor in the fuel line, and a different PCM.

Before you use E85 be sure you determine if it's economical for you. I have the same vehicle (2000 Ranger, 3.0l FF). First, be sure you know exactly how much MPG you get with reg unld (I recommend at least three tanks worth). Then do the same for E85. My experience was an almost 20% reduction in mileage. The reason is that E85 doesn't match the energy output of reg unld. So unless the price of E85 is at least 20% less, it's not worth it to me. Unfortunately, the only local seller (St. Charles, Mo.) of E85 is only 20 cents less per gallon than reg unld. If I bought it, I'd be on the losing end.

It's pretty rare, but if the flex fuel sensor fails, it's a dealer-only part, and the best price I've heard on a new one was around $500 (junkyard would be the place I'd go for one).

enviroment

like the guys are saying its just supposed to be a bit better for the enviroment but if you use the e85. the fuel-filter is also different and is a dealer only part which cost twenty some bucks. i've had no problems with it and i've got two of them!

Wink

I just changed my filter...(2000 Ranger 3.0 Flex Fuel) and bought the filter from my local Parts Plus. Wix part #33409, $21.95! My fuel pump did go bad, so I changed the filter thinking it would fix it, but the warranty from Ford coverd the repair. ($600 & something worth parts & labor!) Dont run the tank dry, keep it filled to at least a quarter tank!

really

what parts store did you get it at? pep-boys and auto-zone said it was a dealer only item. they had the filter but not for the flex-fuel.

Got mine at NAPA

I have gotten fuel filters for my 1999 3.0 flex fuel at NAPA. I think the part number is 3233.

The number I have for a MotorCraft filter is FG-991.

Wix #33409...call the auto parts places to see who carries this brand. Mine was at Parts Plus, for 21.95!

Price at NAPA

I think it was about $20.00, like maybe $19.95 at NAPA about a year ago.
