14.5 MPG!!! What's up with that?

I've had my 2000 F-250 4x4, Crew Cab for almost three weeks now. I was really expecting better fuel economy than 14.5 MPG in town. I have changed the oil and coolant and did the 6637 Filter mod, but other than that it is stock. Am I expecting too much or is this normal? Granted I am at 5000 ft. altitude, but even the drive from Houston was disappointing at 16.5 MPG on the highway.

all depends on what rearend how you drive tires and tranny. but at 14.5 i would say it is decent. some get higher and lower i would say you are in the middle. just thankgod you dont get 6-10 with a v10 or 351.

With my 2002 F350, 4x4 CC, city elevation of 4500', live at 7800' (in 11 miles), commuting up and down canyon, and around town, mixing in some freeways, I get a consistent 14.5 mpg. Goes up to 16-17 on the highway. I'd say you're doing ok...

That is why I wanted a 2wd truck. rarely need 4x4 and didnt want to take the hit on mileage. i asked all my friends with 4x4 trucks and they all told me about the same. ranged from 12-16 mpg. some drive harder than others. on my last fill up, i had gone 480 miles on 20 gallons of diesel. i think it is unreal, but my wife and friends were with me and they were shocked. i keep it under 2k rpm all the time- even on take offs.

Consider youself lucky! I get max of 10 mpg in town and no matter how i drive 15 on the hwy. I also get 10mpg towing wether its an empty trailer
(12k gross) or loaded upto 24k gross.

you're the man! 24mpg? you're the man! I used to get 20-21 pretty regular, 12-13 towing. One tank I broke 23, but that's the most. Now I'm getting 18-20, not sure what's changed.
mileage was worse for a while with increased vibration. had u-joints done and rear-end gear oil changed. vibration is now only slight instead of harsh & constant and mileage is improved, but not back to the 20-21 that I used to get.

I can tell you that when I went from the stock 265's on my '01 to the 305/70/16 BFG A/T, I went from 19-21 mpg down to 16-17 mpg.
At 5280++ ft. alttitude. I guess cool looking tires have more than just the higher purchase price. It sure does drive and ride a heck of a lot better though.

With my 2000 PSD 4x4 stock, the mpg numbers are about what I get in town. Mine usually averages 14.5 to 15.5 strictly in town and highway it seems to hang around 17 mpg, I have had a 18 and 18.5 mpg. I have a 30 mile round trip to work, so usually my in town is mixed with highway and it been around upper 15's to mid 16's mpg. Which comapred to my friends 99 F250 V-10, it blows him out of the water for mpg.
