Cool 95 F350 cuts off ? fuel issue??

Today on my way home my 1995 F350 7.3 cut off while driving about 40 mph. After removing the blackened fuel filter, It started I then drove it about 1/2 mile and it died again, waited a few mins and it restarted this went on for several miles.it would loose power slowley down and would surge like it was out of fuel then cut off. I then got a ride to the auto parts store to replace the fuel filter after putting it back in it started and ran like a champ. For about 4 miles then while sitting at a stop sign it died but restared right away to then sput like before and die after waiting some time I towed it home upon pulling into the drive way it restarts better then new and driving back and fourth in the drive way it runs well and has good pick up. I read the other page about a cam sensor but I would rather not have to drop 100 dollars if this is not the fix and its fuel related what else can be checked to find out.

Thank you all for your help this is my first post here.

Best Regards,

Bill

Also, when it dies watch the tach. If the tach drops, or doesn't move when you crank it, it's probably the cam sensor.
