What changed in the 3.0 for 1993?

Ford put out a chart showing what engines could use 5w20 oil. For the Aerostar 3.0 it showed 1993 and newer could run 5w20. Why did they not say the 1992 could use 5w20? Was there a change to the engine in 1993 that enabled the back specifying of 5w20 for that engine, but not the 1992 and earlier?

I think '92 or '93 was the first year of the revised (hyrdaulic to roller) block, cam and lifters.

I would bet that has something to do with it.

Hee hee, I am running 5w20 anyway, but don't be alarmed, it's Redline and has an HTHS higher than many 30 weights.

I think the engine also went away from rotor/distributor and got electronic ignition in '93. not sure if that's relevant.

Heres what I got {a small part of the article};
CRANKS
There have been only two crankshafts used in the 3.0L motor since 1986:
1986-1994
The original E6AE crank with four counterweights - two in the front and two in the back - was used up through '94.
1995-2003
A new casting that had an additional, narrow counterweight in the middle of the crank was introduced in '95 and has been used ever since. The original crank with the extra counterweight was a F58E-AA casting, but there have also been F5DE and XF1E-AA/DD castings with the fifth counterweight that are very similar and completely interchangeable. We expected that the XF1E-AA/DD would be slightly different because it came with the lighter pistons that were used in the 2002-'03 engines, but it checked out the same as the others on the balancer, so it can be used in any motor after '95, too.
No real reason there.
Blocks
1989 - 1991 (except '91 Probe)
Ford added an extra threaded hole on the driver's side that was located right above the pan rail, just below the motor mount, and about 2 inches forward of the bell housing. These blocks still had the four studded main bolts and were used for all the cars, trucks, and vans including the FWD Probe up through '90. Look for an E9DE or F0ZE casting.
1992-1994 (except tempo/topaz with a/t)
All the 3.0L motors except the Probe got roller lifters in '92, so there was a new F2DE casting that had two more bolt holes in the valley that were needed for the "spider" that kept the roller lifters perpendicular to the cam.

Must be the reason, not really sure though.

'92 Aerostar with 170,000+ miles and a "junkyard" crank swap to keep her running.

Well if it's the roller lifers, and the '92 Aerostar has them, then the back spec of 5w20 should have applied to '92. No matter I don't think I would subject any engine to 5w20 unless for short winter trips or if it's Redline.
