Rear ends

I was just reading some stuff on rear ends and a thought came into my mind. I overheard some guy at work saying you could "shim" a rear end to tighten it up, does anyone know what this guy was talking about?

The teeth on the pinion and ring gears must mesh correctly to avoid abnormal noise and premature wear.

The relative positions of the gears is adjusted by using shims to set the preload.

This is not a job to be taken lightly. There are special tools which should be used to get it right.

He's most likely talking about taking up backslash that comes with wear over the years or he means shim the posi-traction clutches tighter in the diff.If you have a posi.
