Did the 6637 mod. Have a question.

So I picked a perfect day to do the mod. My wife and I went to the movies and came out to a torrential downpoor. We hit tons of water puddles on the way home and the truck seemed to be bogged down when going up hills. I punched it up a hill and it sounded like the turbo was sneezing on the shifts.

Grrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr...pshhhhhh....Grrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr rrrrrrrrr...pshhhhhh

It sounded cool, but I was wondering if it was because of the dense wet air, or if the filter was soaking wet and it was having a hard time breathing. It was raining too damn hard to check the filter when I got home. Thanks

Gotlift,
Brother I'm certain it was one of two things. One, the infamous turbo stall on the 99 and up strokes. Or two, the wastegate opening beween shifts. If you were really standing on it and the wastegate is hooked up, It will open at a certain pressure. Most likely it was the waste gate. But I would be willing to bet that your filter was dry. Damp at worst case senario. I've had my tymar for a long time and seen an azz load of rain and bad weather and It stays vitually dry. One thing I wanted to remind you of so you don't get dissapointed. Over here the altitude is about 700 feet, I think Alb. is like 5500 ft. I remember driving my Ranger between here and there and noticing a conciderable difference. True it won't be as noticable in the strokes, but present none the less. So if it seemed "more peppy" in Houston, that's why. Don't worry about the filter, as long as you installed it right, it's fine. Rest easy, just look forward to your next mods. Hope that helps.

P.S. If it is the turbo surge and you can't live with it.....two words...wicked wheel. Eat some green chilli for me brother, I miss it bad. I'm out!

Green Chile... mmmmmmmmmmmmmm

I'm not dissappointed in the performance of the truck at all. I installed the filter mod because the stock filter housing was filthy on the back side of the filter. I've had the truck for a week today and that is the first time I have heard the turbo do that and the only two things that were different were the air filter and the rain. It makes sense that the wastegate was the culprit, but I don't know why this is the first time it has happened.

Open element filter, your gonna hear everything. And since you did something new to it, your on super what the hell was that alert. It's normal. So what else do you plan to do to it in the near future?

What you are hearing is normal turbo sound that you couldn't hear before because the filter was buried in the box. Nothing to do with the rain; try it on a dry day.

So that was the first time you punched it after the 6637 was installed? Get used to the noise. You said it yourself..."I've had the truck for a week today and that is the first time I have heard the turbo", and you are absolutely correct. That's the sound the turbo makes when you pull the plug out of the intake (stock filter). For the first few days you are going to be hearing all kinds of turbo noises that you didn't know were there.

Oh, and the wastegate is intergral to the exhaust housing of the turbo. There is absolutely no way you can hear it operating.

Amen to that "super what the hell was that alert"!

I don't have any immediate plans for mods. I put $11K down on the truck so my budget is wiped out for a while and right now I'm mostly concerned with fuel prices.

There's an explanation for it, I just can't remember it at this point. But it's not the wastegate. Cookie, lay it down brother, tell him what I mean please sir.

hehe......what a great way to put it...sometimes even if you hear one noise, you go on alert....i know i still do sometimes, and i ain't done a dern thing to my truck other than put expensive fuel into it. hey, 2.69 at Flying J last night. while we're on the subject of hearing things, is it common to hear the clutch plate in the ZF? sometimes i can hear it ( at least thats what i think it is...somethin in the tranny). it just sounds like something in the tranny is spinning up.... usually i only hear it in the low end when theres not a lot of noise pouring out of the stacks.SOUNDS normal, but i wanna make sure....i'm out, got a steel shoot comeptition in an hour and half....

Redstroker6, your clutch should operate silently. Are you talking about the gravelly sound at idle when you are rolling along in first gear?

are you talking about the sound when you are pushing the stick into first from second, the clutch is grabbing the transmission's gears and spooling them up rapidly to sync with the engine RPM?

i was implying any downshift, 5-4 4-3 3-2 2-1. usually at slower speeds you can hear it- if you are coming to a stop light and have to change from 4-2, you can hear it "better"

Should have started a new thread for this question, it's a little off topic for an air filter thread, but anyways....

It's not uncommon for these clutches to chatter a little as the disc's wear and the springs loosen up a bit, but I think you are probably hearng your dual mass flywheel rattling occasionally.
