back awhile ago, someone posted about thinking they had a bad govenor for their tranny. If I remeber the symptoms correctly, I think my truck is starting to go there. under light acceleration, it tries to launch in 3rd. When it does launch in 1st, the revs jump for a split second on the shift. If I acclerate hard off the line, it operates normal, with nice sharp shifts. It seems to be worse when it is hot, the hotter the day, the worse it is......If it is the govenor, can I replace it myself? If so, how?

If it is not.....it is time for a new tranny or is there something else I can do?

thanks
oh.....I have a 77 2wd with a 460, and I am pretty sure a C6.

first just change the fluid and filter. if this doesn't do it then take it to a tranny shop and have the check the pressures before you go taking it apart. because it may be in the valve body.

I was about that but then I read a post about a somebody who had an ailing tranny, changed the fluid and in doing so put the final nail in the coffin on his tranny. Something about it doing something to the seal, or maybe it was that all the crud in the fluid was what was keeping the seals sealing.....I can't remember exactly. After reading that, I realized (in hindsight) that that happened on the tranny of my wife's mopar product minivan......So that kind of scared me off from changing the fluid...I don't want to kill something that is still working okay (just with a little nursing)...I just moved to another city/state (Bellingham WA) and I don't know who is reputible in the tranny shop arena......I guess I am stuck between a rock and a hard place here

[updated:LAST EDITED ON 14-Aug-02 AT 11:35 PM (EST)]If changing fluid is going to mess up your tranny, then your tranny is bound to be on the outs anyway. Better have it go wrong at home than many miles from home.
I had problems with mine - turns out it was the modulator - but I changed fluid first - it is the cheapest thing to do - no problems, but it didn't solve mine - replaced modulator, 2 vaccuum lines and I was in business. SO - go ahead and pull the fluid and filter - you've got nothing to loose - oh, and add some tranny conditioner when you put new fluid in - this helps the seals tremendously!
As for finding a good tranny shop - ask around - somebody you've met or know is bound to know of one.
Best of Luck!

I have a c6. The way you tell them apart is by the shape of the pan. c4's are almost square and a c6 has a square cut out of one of the corners. It's almost like a really fat L shape. That's the best I can explain it right now but you have to know which one you've got cuz a c4 takes type F fluid and a c6 takes the regular mercon/dexron III. My transmission is very messed up and I'm looking for a good Ford transmission shop around my are of West Texas right now too. Sometimes you can guess what it is based on what the engine is if it's stock but then once in a while you come across a weird one like mine that came out of the factory 302 with a c6 which had to have been custom ordered. I made the mistake of looking in a book and saying, "oh it's gotta be a c4 becuz it's a 302." Type F fluid doesn't work to well in a c6. It's horrid smelling when it burns too. That's probly why mine is messed up. Dad didn't catch the mistake and even argued with me a week later when I figured it out. Talk about realizing what you don't know right? Just thought I'd throw my $.02 in cuz I made that mistake already!

the c-6 was switched to dexcron in 73 or 74 cuz my custom build 72 lincoln c-6 uses type-f and has a screw in modulator.

Conditioner wise you just have to look to see what is available in your local auto parts store & how much $$$ you want to spend. I just got some stuff that was branded by my local parts (n'stuff) store - Canadian Tire.
By the way - I also have a 302 bolted to a C-6 - I thought I had a c-4 as well - many things I read pointed to it being a C-4 - I found out when the gasket didn't look like the pan!
My Two Cents!

The original C6 (behind a 360) in my '74 F-100 takes Type F (says so right on the dipstick).

With a fresh tranny, you can use either mercron/dexron or type F. I am told that the type F fluid provides a slightly firmer shift. he same ppl tell me that the reason you dont want to mix/change the type of fluid you are using is because the origional fluid will be impregnated into the clutches, and when you switch types, there some sort of conflict that causes the clutches to wear faster??? I dunno. Take your truck to a tranny shop and have them test drive it. If they tell you it needs re-building, but wont tell you what is wrong with it, go to another shop. The mom and pop places are usually the best bet for getting a straight answer, and a better deal. If you can, find a place that will "repair" a transmission. They will take it apart, replace all of the seals, pressure test it, and put in good used clutches. This will run you around $3-400 instead of $6-1200, and if all goes well, it will last you a long time.
