E100 Pickup Transmission Swap

I have a 1965 econoline P/U that i would like to change the 3 speed to an auto. It has the 170 6 cyl. What tranny bolts on? I would guess that i would go with a cable shifter. Any ideas on how much work this involves?

I am going to be doing the same thing myself.

Econolines were available with auto, but the Econoline auto tranny has a shorter tailshaft, so you either need an tranny out of an auto Econoline, or you need to swap out the tail shaft.

You also need all the linkage, tranny mounts and auto steering column.

I bought a '66 parts van that came with the 240 six and auto. I am going to rebuild both and put them in my '62 Station Bus.

If an FMX that was bolted to a 302 would do either of you any good, you could have it. Too bad you both live so far away. Coming all the way to South Dakota to get it would negate the benefits of a freebie, I guess....... If anyone closer is interested, let me know. I would much rather see it go to a good use then go to the recycler some day.

any c4 from a small six, [144-200, before 1982], will bolt to the motor. the problem is the mounting at the rear and tail shaft length. econo trans are hung from a mount, everything else is setting on the mount. they also have a shorter rear shaft. car trans can be used in econo's with a fabricated crossmember and driveshaft, just watch the angle of the shaft at the rear for u joint binding.

not realy a good spot to mount a cable shifter in an econo, and you have to have a special cable because of the length. course then you gotta find an econo column for the auto shift, not an easy job by any means.
